There have been Ferauds (of French and Italian origin) growing vines in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since 1670.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003ePaul was one of four children. Feeling that was too many he decided to have one child, and hit the jackpot with brilliant daughter Laurence. Paul spent the first half of his career cultivating his 17 acres of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. 90% of the production was sold in bulk to top Negociants; the remaining 10% was bottled as Cuvee Reservee, thus the origin of the name for the basic Chateauneuf.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eIn 1987 Laurence joined her father and created the Domaine du Pegau. Born to grow wine, she took courses in both viticulture and the beverage alcohol business. She sold wine in Paris, but wanted to come home. Excellent at both winegrowing and business, it took her but five years to build bottle sales from 10 to 100% of production! Since then, her purchases have expanded the vineyards in Chateauneuf to 42+ acres.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eLaurence does not have a single arrogant or snobbish molecule in her body, but she is restless and ambitious. In 2012 a large property called Domaine de la Jouve came up for sale. Four miles from Pegau, it is on the banks of the Rhone in the town of Sorgues. It consists of 148 acres and a large rundown Chateau of 10,000 square feet. The ~101 acres of vineyards include 62 of Cotes du Rhone Villages and 12 of Cotes du Rhone, with the balance Vin de Table. Laurence bought it and rechristened it Chateau Pegau. For the first vintage, she and Paul learning their way, they declassified most of the Villages to Cotes du Rhone. The red Cotes du Rhone carries the name Chateau Pegau Cuvée Maclura. The Cotes du Rhone Villages (15% of the production) is Chateau Pegau Cuvée Setier. These are complemented by a white Cotes du Rhone, Chateau Pegau Cuvée Lône. The wines are emphatically not Chateauneuf-du-Pape, nor are they priced that way. The estate controls 850 hectares and is surrounded by 165 hectares of Mediterranean forest. Eighty hectares are planted to vineyards which are cultivated on dry, rocky clay and limestone-based soil. When Francoise Rigord took over, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon were added to the Grenache and Cinsault already grown at the estate. The Rolle (a.k.a. Vermentino) and Ugni Blanc are the principal white grape varieties, supplemented by Semillon and Clairette. Peyrassol has rigorously maintained organic principles in full respect of the surrounding environment and the delicate balance of the local Mediterranean ecosystem. No synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides are used in the vineyards. Organic foliar sprays help prevent chlorosis (nutrient deficiencies) and sheep manure is the only fertilizer used after the planting. The age of the vines, the rocky terrain, and the hot, dry climate establish conditions that severely restrict yields. Although one approaches the grand Alps from here, the altitude is modest, but the terrain is mountainous, roads are winding, and villages are seemingly hidden from plain sight, tucked into endless crags and crevices to protect them from winter. Vineyards are difficult to spot as well. An hectare here and there, always on a small scale. Our kind of place.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt's no surprise then that Bugey (pronounced Boo-zjay) is one of the best-kept secrets in France. Mostly this is because what is made there, stays there. With minuscule quantities of production, a somewhat isolated populace, and hordes of visitors year round, the wines of Bugey don't travel far before being slurped with an Alpine meal, or washed down apres-ski.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eVines have been planted in Bugey since Roman times, later resurrected by medieval monks, and only recently (2009) been recognized by France with AOC status. Today there are just three crus in Bugey, with one, Cerdon, dedicated exclusively to the production of sparkling wine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDaniel Boccard is not going slow, and never has been. A six-time Alps Grand Prix racing champion in the 80's, Daniel retired to his family farm and began the task of making wine from their sub-alpine vineyards in the Savoie. To call his place in the wine world spectacular is selling it short.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBoccard works without fertilizers or chemicals and makes a wine that is as natural as could be called methode ancestrale. In this manner of producing sparkling wine all fermentation is spontaneous, no added sugars or yeasts, and is accomplished partially in tank at the beginning, but then slowly completed in bottle over the winter and spring following the harvest. The finished wine essentially defines what Bugey Cerdon should be--delicate bubbles that capture a slightly sweet, frothy, strawberry cream soda of a pink sparkling wine. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere's only one way to drink a Bugey Cerdon--ice cold, to start a meal, or to convivially enjoy while preparing the repast. As mentioned earlier, most is consumed locally, and most small, local vignerons politely turn away importers at the door.
