A century on, their vineyards have grown to some 450 acres in McLaren Vale, including Shiraz dating back to d'Arenberg's first plantings in 1912, and nearly one-third of McLaren Vale's old bush-vine Grenache. Fourth generation winemaker, Chester Osborn, recently converted all of the family's vineyards to organics and biodynamics and moved to solar energy in the winery. All the while, in terms of winemaking, not much has changed--all the wines are basket-pressed, the reds foot-trodden during fermentation; everything is done in small batches, leading to an impressive array of bottlings every year, each showing a different facet of McLaren Vale terroir. The Mount Edelstone Vineyard was planted in 1912 by Ronald Angas, a descendant of George Fife Angas who founded The South Australian Company and played a significant part in the formation and establishment of South Australia. Unusual for its time, the vineyard was planted solely to shiraz. The ancient 500-million-year-old geology in the vineyard has given rise to soils that are deep red-brown clay-loam to clay, resulting in low yields from the dry-grown, ungrafted centenarian vines. First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1952 by fourth-generation Cyril Henschke. By the time Cyril purchased the vineyard from Colin Angas in 1974, Mount Edelstone was already well entrenched as one of Australia’s greatest shiraz wines. Indeed, the old “great western” name harks back to the mid 19th century, a time when the vast expanse of western Victoria meant the gold rushes and endless get rich quick opportunities. But with the population influx into the western provinces, some say up to 20,000 miners were prospecting in Ballarat as early as 1853, other industries grew over time too. One of these was wine.

Henry Best, for whom Best’s Great Western is named, planted his first vines in the region as far back as 1866. A few decades later, the scotsman William Thomson bought property and planted vines at Rhymney to the south, adding the original Best’s vineyards to his holdings in 1920 upon Henry Best’s death. The Thomson family continue to own and operate Best’s Great Western today, making it one of the few historic Australian wineries to remain non-corporatized.

Best’s original plantings included 48,000 vines and many exist today, pre-phylloxera and on their original rootstock. Soils range from hard setting silt over clay to friable clay loams. In general the soils and vineyards are low yielding and retain moisture very well, essential in a region with limited rainfall. The altitude of the Grampians region results in lower than average temperatures than that of the Central Victorian wine regions to the east. The climate of the region is Mediterranean with breezes from the Southern Ocean providing a cooling influence during summer. The Icon range represents the old 1860s dry grown vines, such as the Old Vine Pinot Meunier and ‘Bin 0’ Shiraz; Concongella are special wines that are made as a result of a particular vintage, innovative cellar or winemaking techniques; and the Great Western Range represents Best’s classic, medium-bodied style of wines including Shiraz and Riesling.

ABOUT THIS WINE

We’re never shy of proclaiming our love of Aglianico, and rose…. and sparkling wine for that matter, so here is our love child of these passions; Chalmers Col Fondo, a sparkling Aglianico Rosato complete with the lees in the bottle.

What is Col Fondo? Wine has been produced here since the time of the Celts and continued throughout the time of the Romans. Germanic monks obtained the estate during the collapse of Rome, and the first written evidence of winemaking comes from 470 A.D. Essentially this estate has always been organic. Nicholas Saahs and his wife Christine took over the estate in the late 1960s and Christine instigated the conversion to biodynamic farming. Nikolaihof has been practicing Bio-dynamics since 1971, making them one of the longest Bio-dynamic practicing wineries in the world. Nikoliahof became Demeter certified Bio-dynamic in 1998. The Barossa Valley sub-region is especially known for the quality of its dry-farmed, often very old Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Grenache vines and the inky dark wines they yield.

Dean Hewitson founded his eponymous winery in 1998. He is a highly respected winemaker with an oenology degree in 1986 from Roseworthy Agricultural College, located in north of Adelaide, South Australia. Over the next decade, Hewitson worked at wineries in Australia, France, Italy and Oregon. Hewitson then moved to the U.S. where he earned a Masters from UC-Davis. On his return home, Dean brought a wealth of knowledge, practical experience and a driving passion to produce wines not only from Barossa Valley, but also from the McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills regions.

Hewitson fundamentally believes great wines are the expression of the soils they are grown in and the season in which they are grown. With his longstanding focus on terroir—specific terroir plots in fact—many of Hewitson’s wines are single vineyard. He sources grapes from not only his own vineyards, but also from long standing grower contracts including a few sourced from some of the oldest living, still productive vines on plots that date back to the mid-19th century and are pre-phylloxera. His ‘Old Garden’ Mourvèdre is a single-vineyard wine, whose vines were planted in 1853 in Barossa Valley and are reputed to be the oldest Mourvèdre vines in the world. Hewitson’s ‘Miss Harry’ is sourced from a Grenache vineyard planted in 1880, also thought to be the oldest Grenache in existence.

Due to Hewitson’s education and experience in Australia, California and France, Hewitson wines combine Old-World traditions with New-World fruit purity. And while he clearly excels with Rhône Valley grape varieties, Hewitson also produces award-winning Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. With a “Sustainable Winegrowing Australia” certification, he is a practitioner in solar energy, water recycling and encouraging natural biodiversity and is proud to produce these wines in an environmentally sustainable fashion.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0804/6785/3601/files/SSWINEBOTTLEPHOTOTEMPLATE_24d4c182-4f60-4768-8b20-1c89413e03eb.png?v=1738782618

ABOUT THIS WINE

Sourced from the steep slopes of the "Bloody Hill" vineyard, this Pinot Noir reflects Timo Mayer’s signature whole-bunch fermentation technique, enhancing its aromatics and textural complexity.
