On his own vineyards, however, Steve cares for the vines with his own hands, driving the tractor at night, and working with the crews on Sundays.

MATTHIASSON moved to Napa in 2002. In December 2006, they took their wine plans another step forward and bought a small parcel tucked behind a subdivision just west of the city of Napa. They began replanting the property's 3 1/2 acres of vineyard to an initial lot of Ribolla Gialla - traced back to Josko Gravner's vineyard in Friuli -- Merlot, Refosco, and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2009 MATTHIASSON had the chance to plant a vineyard on the West slopes of the town of Sonoma. The Michael Mara vineyard is now one of the most sought after sights for Chardonnay in California. Steve also farms a few parcels in Napa for their signature blends.

MATTHIASSON's crowning achievement is a white that combines the spirit of Bordeaux and northern Italy's Friuli region - a mix of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Ribolla Gialla and Tocai Friulano, the latter two almost nonexistent in California. Every vine for every wine was planted by RSV and every vineyard is certified* organic. One could say that RSV is beyond organic. Since 1991, RSV has been practicing the “whole farm” philosophy of interrelationships based on Rudolph Steiner’s 1928 lecture “Agriculture.” This approach stresses the need to heal damage done by modern, mechanized farming - tapping into the rhythms of nature, encouraging natural processes, to grow superior winegrapes that require little but care to craft into expressive, vibrant and living wines.

RSV approaches the cellar as purists (with the same winemaker, Jeff Virnig, for over twenty-five years) to craft wines that are true and pure. The guiding principle that “wine is not an athletic event” has allowed the wines of RSV to stay true to vineyard and variety. Elegance over brawn has always been the house style and RSV does not submit wine for review by score-centric critics; because to taste wine in a competitive atmosphere, without food on the table, encourages wines that shout, ignoring subtle wines of balance, finesse and elegance... the attributes that define the fine wines of RSV.

*RSV’s vineyards are certified by C.C.O.F. - California Certified Organic Farmers. Happily, natural acidity persists during ripening under these conditions and wildly complex flavors and aromas result. As the weather was perfect at flowering, we had a bumper crop. The grapes were sourced from 3 St. Helena vineyards: Sunbasket Vineyard, Grech vineyard (3 properties west of Kronos), and Hayne Vineyard which all share bale gravely loam soil. These well-drained alluvial soils had a long history of producing balanced, age-worthy, world-class wines, reaching back to the late 19th century. In her early years everything was done with smoke and mirrors, using purchased fruit and space in others’ wineries.

In 1995, with the purchase of Kronos Vineyard, a property that had been a farm for over a century, there was finally an estate vineyard and a place to build a winery. In the spring of 1999 we broke ground to build our stately Victorian-style winery barn, designed by Cathy’s husband, William Martin. Our second estate vineyard, Sunbasket, a stone’s throw from the winery, was purchased in 2015 after sourcing it for over 25 years.

Cathy’s winemaking journey began nearly 45 years ago when she took a wine appreciation course at Pomona College on a complete whim. She fell in love with wine for all the usual reasons, but, as a Biology major, was also taken by the fact that wine is the result of a fascinating collaboration among a series of living systems. Two years later she graduated, and two days after that, arrived in the Napa Valley, bent on making wine. A master’s degree in Enology at UC Davis followed, and then a harvest internship at Freemark Abbey in 1978. Winemaking positions included Yverdon in 1979-1980 and then Chappellet Vineyard for the 1980’s. In 1987, toward the end of her tenure at Chappellet, there was a wine inside her that needed to get out and she began to buy grapes and barrels (instead of cars and houses). Using other wineries’ excess capacity while continuing to moonlight at Staglin, York Creek and Long Meadow Ranch, Corison Winery was born.

Cathy’s husband, William, grew up in upstate New York working at his grandfather’s lumberyard and, using both sides of his brain, majored in Art & Physics at Middlebury College in Vermont. After several years in Boston working for an architect and cultivating his passion for food and wine, he met Cathy in 1990. They married two years later and William moved to the Napa Valley, just in time to help with the 1992 harvest. He soon brought Corison Winery into the digital age with its first computer, and remains the IT and Accounting departments to this day. A man with a long view, he searched for a vineyard and winery site and then orchestrated the purchase of Kronos Vineyard in 1995. He designed the winery barn and the classic landscaping and then built a model of the barn and shepherded us through the arduous use permit process. We broke ground in 1999, building a winemaking home at long last. With a combination of instinct and serendipity, he found five majestic palm trees in 2014 at a nearby jobsite and had them moved to grace our driveway and the Victorian vineyard house. His next big project was the masterful renovation of the old house, originally built in 1898, which has since been rechristened the Palm House. Most recently, he negotiated the purchase of Sunbasket Vineyard, a favorite vineyard that Corison Winery had sourced for nearly 30 years, and negotiated a long term lease on another adjacent vineyard. Created in 1996 by Claude and Katherine Blankiet, sixteen acres have been developed by renowned viticulturist David Abreu.

The vineyards, known as Paradise Hills, are stunningly beautiful with gorgeous views of the valley. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are planted on volcanic soil. Merlot is planted on a deep layer of alluvial clay deposited by streams draining the mountain range. Organic farming is practiced and the human hand is the connection between vines and wines.

Our artisanal production amounts to less than a few hundred cases each of three flagship Red Wines: The “Estate Paradise Hills Proprietary Red” a predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with various percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The “Rive Droite Paradise Hills” is a Pomerol inspired assemblage of Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc. The "Mythicus Paradise Hills" is a selection of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. We also produce a small quantity of a delicious Rosé, barrel fermented and aged in new French oak. Lastly, a companion red wine is assembled from barrels that did not get selected for the flagship cuvées. Both these wines are produced under our “Prince of Hearts” label.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0804/6785/3601/products/img-0005_f36ff53a-e790-403b-a534-34e1815073ce.png?v=1692039127
maitre-de-chai-gala-mountain-cabernet-sauvign
2020 Maître de Chai "Gala Mountain" Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, California, USA

ABOUT THIS WINE

When Marty and Alex first walked into this vineyard, they knew they HAD to work with this fruit even though working with Cabernet was never in the plan. Planted in 1992 on rocky volcanic bedrock on the slopes of Mt. George, about 1000ft above the floor of the Napa Valley—this is just high enough to get constant breezes from the San Pablo Bay. Converted to biodynamic farming from organic in 2018, this farmed by hand. A beautifully unique example of old school, “pre-prohibition” style mountain Cabernet.

The tannin hits up front at first, which alongside the volcanic terroir has us thinking of Etna, then continues up the side with fruit density like in Tuscany and finishes with a hard mineral toned and linear mid-palate. Along their journey, they have learned first-hand that it takes bravery and an open mind to see the underlying potential of a vineyard. If you’re anything like them, you seek to savor something beyond the typical – something truly extraordinary.

The team works with a sustainable approach in both the vineyards and in the cellar. It is through this labor-intensive journey that we are re-inspired each vintage to craft wines that are wonderful to enjoy now or to cellar for years to come.

The goal for each vintage is to seek the thrill of discovery – especially in uncharted territory.
