The Quady site is relatively high in the hills above the Applegate river, and is generally warmer than the Willamette Valley. However, at high elevation, the Quady site is cooler and wetter than the Rogue Valley AVA at lower elevation and to the east. Herb grew up in the famed Quady Family in California’s Central Valley. He later became the vineyard manager for Randall Graham’s Bonny Doon wine empire before coming north to southern Oregon with his sights on applying organic farming techniques to a region with largely undiscovered vineyard potential. His Mae’s Vineyard block slopes southeast into the Applegate Valley in one of the prettiest spots we’ve seen in the state. Since 2004 when Robert and Ellen Brittan purchased the vineyard, it has been an ongoing rehabilitation project: replating, retraining and learning the unique landscape that has become the Brittan Vineyard. The three acre, southeast facing Cygnus Block was planted in 2008 to Swan selection, a selection of Pinot noir they believe was brought in from Burgundy around the 1880s and planted in California.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eABOUT THIS PRODUCER\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt took years to find the ideal site on which to grow Pinot Noir but after an exhaustive search, Brittan Vineyards began on an 128-acre hillside in Oregon in December 2004. However, close to 50% has subsequently been re-planted in order to fine-tune the viticultural practices and improve the clonal and rootstock combinations. But exactly where was the best place to put down roots? The Valley holds a wide range of microclimates and soils, and in 1965, David had the whole valley to choose from.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn February 1965, David rented a temporary nursery plot near Corvallis, and planted the 3000 vinifera grape cuttings he gathered from UC Davis and selected growers and brought with him to Oregon. This was the first planting of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Willamette Valley, and the first “New World” Pinot gris. Over the following year, David went looking for his perfect vineyard site. He made an exhaustive review of regional climate and soil, studied historical climate records and soil maps, and criss-crossed the valley from side to side and top to bottom.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the course of his explorations, David narrowed his search to the upper third of the Valley, pulling away from the foothills of the Cascades (too cool) and the Coast Range of the mid-Valley (too warm). After identifying the right climatic zone, the next challenge was soil. David kept a soil auger in the back of his car, and whenever he saw a likely-looking site for sale, he pulled over and dug a hole. He identified the volcanic Jory and Nekia soils prominent in certain valley hillsides as having the right combination of limited fertility and superior water-holding properties.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese soils were deposited as volcanic flows 15 to 17 million years ago. Over time, the surface of the basalt mother-rock decomposed into a red soil overlaying a deep layer of rounded and eroded basalt cobble. This combination gives Jory and Nekia soils special properties that are ideal for dry-farmed vines. The soil structure allows the constant winter rains of the valley to drain readily. However, in Oregon’s very dry summers, the underground cobbles retain enough water in their cracks and crevices to support the vines without the need for irrigation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn addition to climate and soil, elevation and location were important. David sought a south or south-east facing site, with a sloped aspect sufficient to drain away damaging spring frosts. The elevation had to be high enough to access the volcanic soils of the slopes, but low enough for heat to ripen the grapes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDavid kept returning to the Dundee Hills. In spite of the threat of suburban development, the area seemed just right for grapes. A remarkably consistent and concentrated outcrop of volcanic-origin soils, skirted at lower elevations with sedimentary ice-age soils, offered the perfect combination of climate and soil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 1966, David finally found what he was looking for – a gentle 20-acre south-facing slope at the south end of the Dundee Hills. As the valley heats up on warm summer days it creates a sink for the cool maritime breezes that are pulled through the corridor and across the vineyards. The result is a daily beating by the Van Duzer winds lowering the average daily temperatures 2-3°F compared to the Dundee Hills and other sub regions of the Willamette Valley. The cooler, slower growing season allows the fruit to obtain ripe flavors at lower sugar levels and higher acidity. The elevation of Johan Vineyards Estate ranges from approximately 180 to 380 feet, with several different slope directions. The soils are Helvetia, Steiwer, and Santiam silts formed primarily from Missoula Flood deposits over ancient marine sedimentary rock. For Johan Vineyards, the Missoula Floods devastation through the valley has resulted in a very complex soil composition, characterized by shallow topsoils with a high concentration of decomposed granite.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe farming philosophy of Johan Vineyards is to integrate natural farming methods with the most advanced viticultural research to produce the highest possible quality fruit that is true to its terroir. In 2010 Johan Vineyards received both Organic Certification from Stellar Certification Services and Biodynamic Certification from Demeter USA. The winemaking at Johan is now under the guidance of Morgan Beck, who after spending time in various winemaking positions in California, came to Johan in 2015. In the spring of 2020, Morgan was also entrusted to be the General Manager at Johan in addition to her winemaking responsibilities. The wines are made with all native fermentations and a limited use of new French oak. Because of the long, cooler growing season at the site they get very good lignification of the stems and therefore utilize a good percentage of whole cluster in the winemaking as well. The resulting wines are precise with a beautiful purity and a very savory element.
