By March, the water table was partially restored due to snow and rainfall in the mountains. Budbreak began on March 25th and the following two months saw a succession of gentle rainfall as well as very severe hailstorms that our vineyards luckily avoided. After a progressive flowering, warm weather settled in early June and lasted through the summer. Once September came around, the temperature dropped, resulting in ideal conditions for the Nebbiolo harvest. The vineyards are truly a treasure and are often visited by other producers from the area. The cellar sits close to the top of the Bricco San Giuliano hill, completely surrounded by Pelissero vineyards. Since the death of Pasquale in 2007, daughter Ornella has carried on the family tradition, doing everything on her own in the vineyards and cellar, her sole innovation being the acquisition of a temperature-controlled fermentation tank. Born to grow wine, she took courses in both viticulture and the beverage alcohol business. She sold wine in Paris, but wanted to come home. Excellent at both winegrowing and business, it took her but five years to build bottle sales from 10 to 100% of production! Since then, her purchases have expanded the vineyards in Chateauneuf to 42+ acres.

Laurence does not have a single arrogant or snobbish molecule in her body, but she is restless and ambitious. In 2012 a large property called Domaine de la Jouve came up for sale. Four miles from Pegau, it is on the banks of the Rhone in the town of Sorgues. It consists of 148 acres and a large rundown Chateau of 10,000 square feet. The ~101 acres of vineyards include 62 of Cotes du Rhone Villages and 12 of Cotes du Rhone, with the balance Vin de Table. Laurence bought it and rechristened it Chateau Pegau. For the first vintage, she and Paul learning their way, they declassified most of the Villages to Cotes du Rhone. The red Cotes du Rhone carries the name Chateau Pegau Cuvée Maclura. The Cotes du Rhone Villages (15% of the production) is Chateau Pegau Cuvée Setier. These are complemented by a white Cotes du Rhone, Chateau Pegau Cuvée Lône. The wines are emphatically not Chateauneuf-du-Pape, nor are they priced that way. As he told Allen Meadows, “I want to do as little as possible to the wine. I want low yields and no signature.” After complete destemming, fermentation lasted 10 to 12 days, with a 12 to 18-month élévage in largely used barrels. To extract fine tannins, the cap was kept moist by twice-daily pump overs. There he found Cedar Knoll Vineyard and Winery, where the Palmaz Vineyards and family reside today, just off what’s now known as Hagen Road.

Hagen became one of the true pioneers of the Napa Valley: His noteworthy wines are featured at the San Francisco Opera House and served to some of the finest people of the city, according to contemporary newspaper accounts.
