Joseph Roty was a legendary Burgundian vigneron known for producing deeply traditional, age-worthy wines in Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay. The Roty family has been making wine for over 200 years, and Joseph, who passed away in 2008, was especially revered for his meticulous vineyard work and commitment to old-vine parcels, including some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Burgundy.

His wines, often richly textured and intensely structured, were known for their longevity, concentration, and classic style. He favored low yields, extended maceration, and thoughtful use of oak both new and used—techniques that resulted in robust, cellar-worthy reds. The estate continues today under his son Pierre-Jean Roty, maintaining the family’s high standards and traditional approach.
