1994 Giuseppe Rinaldi "Brunate-Le Coste" Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

Expect a fully mature, savory expression of Nebbiolo, with an evolved and complex nose, opening with dried rose petals, red cherry, cranberry and orange peel, followed by layers of tobacco, leather, dried herbs, forest floor and earthy truffle. On the palate, the wine should be elegant and relatively delicate with faded red fruit framed by bright Nebbiolo acidity and fine, resolved tannins. Savory notes of dried cherry, licorice, tobacco, mushroom and autumn leaves lead into a long, earthy, floral finish.

ABOUT THIS WINE

This wine reflects Rinaldi’s belief that blending great vineyard sites could produce a more complete Barolo. Historically, the blend was roughly 60–75% Brunate and 25–40% Le Coste. Brunate contributed considerable structure and depth, while Le Coste helped provide balance and additional nuance. Rinaldi continued making the wine under the Brunate-Le Coste name through 2009. Changes to Barolo vineyard-labeling regulations meant that from 2010 onward the estate labeled its successor simply “Brunate,” with no more than 15% Le Coste included.

1994 was only the second vintage officially bottled as Brunate-Le Coste, following the inaugural 1993.

1994 was a difficult year in Piedmont. A cool, wet spring was followed by a warmer summer, but heavy rain and cool weather arrived in September, making ripening and harvest challenging. The vintage generally produced Barolos with less concentration and structure than the celebrated years surrounding it

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Giuseppe Rinaldi is one of the most revered names in traditional Barolo, with deep family roots in the village of Barolo. Giuseppe “Beppe” Rinaldi took over the estate from his father, Battista, in 1992 and became a passionate defender of classic Barolo during a period of rapid modernization in the region. He believed great Barolo should develop slowly, retain its natural structure and character, and have the ability to evolve beautifully over decades.

Rinaldi’s winemaking remained resolutely traditional, favoring indigenous-yeast fermentations, long macerations, and aging in large Slavonian oak botti rather than small new-oak barrels. Beppe was also a strong believer in the historic practice of blending vineyards to create more complete and balanced wines. This philosophy produced the estate’s celebrated Brunate-Le Coste and Cannubi San Lorenzo-Ravera Barolos. Changes to labeling regulations beginning with the 2010 vintage eventually led to these wines being reorganized and renamed.

Following Beppe Rinaldi’s death in 2018, his daughters Marta and Carlotta continued the family legacy, preserving the estate’s traditional approach. Today, Giuseppe Rinaldi remains synonymous with beautifully perfumed, structured, age-worthy Barolo. These wines are prized for their authenticity, complexity, and unmistakable expression of Nebbiolo and the hills of Barolo.
