2003 Château Mouton-Rothschild Premier Cru Classé Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

The 2003 Château Mouton-Rothschild is a powerful and captivating wine, with the intense heat of the vintage giving it an opulence and concentration that is both compelling and seductive. The nose is aromatic and complex, with layers of dark, ripe fruits—blackberry, cassis, and plum—interwoven with notes of roasted coffee, tobacco, and a touch of graphite. As the wine opens up, further nuances of dark chocolate, spices, and toasted oak develop, creating a multi-faceted and evolving bouquet. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, with rich, concentrated fruit flavors supported by velvety tannins that give the wine a plush, luxurious mouthfeel. The balance between the bold fruit and fresh acidity is superb, and the wine’s minerality adds a layer of complexity that enhances its length and depth. The oak is perfectly integrated, adding hints of vanilla, spice, and toasted almond, without overpowering the fruit. The finish is long, warm, and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, tobacco, and a fine mineral edge. The 2003 Mouton-Rothschild is a wine of great power and complexity, and while it is already showing beautifully, it has the structure to evolve further for decades to come.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The 2003 Château Mouton-Rothschild is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing the backbone and structure of the wine, while the Merlot and Petit Verdot add roundness and complexity. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully sorted before fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in oak barrels and was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak, imparting richness and complexity. The 2003 vintage was marked by a particularly hot growing season, which led to a very early harvest. Despite the heat, the wine maintains a remarkable freshness and balance, thanks to careful vineyard management and precise winemaking. The result is a wine that combines power, elegance, and complexity, with the structure to age for many years.
