2006 Dom Perignon "P2", Champagne, France
A rich, intense, and harmonious Champagne with a full bouquet of tangerine, glazed apricot, candied ginger, wild peach, and hints of ripe orchard pear, complimented by undernotes of smoke, toasted brioche, crushed mint, saffron, and subtle toasted hazelnuts. On the palate, it is creamy, with flavors reminiscent of creamed cherry, cocoa, dried fruit, and sweet spices backed by racy, lemon-infused acidity. The finish it long, mineral-driven, and elegant with a saline nuance and delicate chalky bitterness.
ABOUT THIS WINE
The 2006 Dom Pérignon “P2” (Plénitude 2) is an extended-aged release of Dom Pérignon’s 2006 vintage. “P2” refers to the house’s idea of a second stage of maturity: a small portion of a vintage is kept in Dom Pérignon’s cellars for many additional years before disgorgement rather than being released with the standard vintage bottling. The 2006 reached P2 after roughly seven additional years of maturation, becoming more precise and saline while retaining the generosity of the vintage.
2006 was generally warm and dry, although August turned unusually cool and wet. Warm, dry September weather proved crucial: it helped dry out botrytis and pushed the grapes to unusually high ripeness. Harvest began September 11 and continued for nearly three weeks.
The 2006 P2 commonly gives a blend of approximately 55% Pinot Noir / 45% Chardonnay, around 14–15 years of lees aging, and a relatively low dosage around 4.5–5 g/L. Disgorgement information varies by release.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Dom Pérignon is one of Champagne’s most iconic prestige cuvées, produced by Moët & Chandon and part of LVMH. It takes its name from Dom Pierre Pérignon, the 17th-century Benedictine monk of Hautvillers Abbey who played an important role in improving vineyard practices, blending, and wine quality in Champagne. While he did not “invent” Champagne, his pursuit of harmony through blending remains central to the house’s philosophy.
Unlike most Champagne houses, Dom Pérignon produces only vintage Champagne - there is no non-vintage bottling. Each release is made from a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from a single harvest, with the proportions adjusted to reflect the character of the year. The wines are known for their precision, complexity, minerality, and texture, with extended lees aging playing an essential role in developing the signature style.
The current Chef de Cave is Vincent Chaperon, who succeeded longtime cellar master Richard Geoffroy. Chaperon had worked alongside Geoffroy for years before taking responsibility for Dom Pérignon. The newly presented 2018 Dom Pérignon is particularly significant because it is the first vintage made entirely under Chaperon’s direction
