2008 Bollinger "R.D.", Extra-Brut, Champagne, France

A profound and time-defying Champagne, the 2008 Bollinger R.D. (“Recently Disgorged”) is a masterclass in precision, complexity, and vitality. Opening with richly layered aromas of toasted hazelnuts, baked brioche, dried apricots, and candied citrus, this Extra-Brut cuvée balances Bollinger’s signature oxidative depth with the crystalline tension of the stellar 2008 vintage. The palate is powerful yet impeccably refined—dense in texture with chalky precision, vibrant acidity, and a persistent, saline-inflected finish that speaks to its extended lees aging and low dosage.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The 2008 R.D. is composed of 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from 18 crus—predominantly Grand and Premier Cru sites including Aÿ, Verzenay, and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. After fermentation in old oak barrels and partial malolactic conversion, the wine spent over 13 years on the lees before disgorgement in 2022, showcasing the "Recently Disgorged" (R.D.) philosophy Bollinger pioneered: late disgorgement to preserve freshness and aromatic intensity while revealing the complexity that only time can deliver. The dosage is kept low (3 g/L), allowing the wine’s purity and terroir expression to shine. Expect layers of roasted almond, citrus peel, and iodine minerality to unfold with air. A wine for contemplative sipping or elegant pairings such as langoustine, truffle risotto, or aged Comté.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

With over 170 hectares of vineyards, many Grand Cru, Bollinger emphasizes sustainable viticulture and meticulous parcel selection. The R.D. label, introduced in 1967, epitomizes Madame Bollinger’s vision of a Champagne that evolves in bottle but retains dazzling freshness through late disgorgement. Today, the house remains committed to producing wines of depth, precision, and timeless elegance.
