ABOUT THE WINE

The 2023 Bourgogne Rouge is made from estate-grown Pinot Noir, sourced from the domaine’s Bourgogne-level vineyards around Savigny-lès-Beaune. In the cellar, Jean-Jacques Girard works with a classic, gentle approach: the fruit is fully destemmed, given a short maceration in open vats, and fermented under temperature control before aging in mostly used Burgundy barrels, with only about 15% new oak. The result is a wine that keeps the purity of Pinot Noir at the center — bright red fruit, supple tannins, and a clean, elegant Burgundy finish.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

The domaine of Jean-Jacques Girard extends over 18 hectares in the Cote D`Or region of Burgundy. It is divided among the villages of Nuit St George, Savigny, Pernand-Vergelesses and Volnay. One of our favourite producers, we like Jean Jacques wines as they offer great purity and elegance that is beautifully married with an aromatic, fruity style. He uses cool fermentation that helps keep the wines stylistically fresh. A great range for all occasions delivering consistent quality and superb value from this highly-rated region.

Jean-Jacque Girard's family was growing grapes in Savigny-les Beaune back in 1529. That, as the French say, is 'formidable', and would make the domain one of the oldest in Burgundy. But really what matters to us today is what happened to the domain in the past generation. In the late 90s, the original and venerable Domaine Girard-Vollot was split between Georges Girard's two sons Jean-Jacques and Phillipe. The original domain was about 38 acres. And since the split, Jean-Jacques has built his holdings back to over 40 acres, making it one of the most impressive domains in Savigny.
