ABOUT THIS WINE
Viña Gravonia is one of Rioja’s most distinctive traditional white wines, produced entirely from Viura grown in López de Heredia’s own Viña Zaconia vineyard, historically associated with the name Gravonia. Located only about 200 meters from the winery near the Ebro River, the 24-hectare vineyard is planted exclusively to Viura. Its poor, stony soils encourage deep root systems and contribute to the wine’s characteristic freshness, structure and longevity.
The wine is made according to López de Heredia’s remarkably traditional methods and undergoes four years of aging in barrel, with two rackings each year. It is clarified with fresh egg whites and bottled without filtration, followed by further maturation in bottle before release. This extended élevage gives Gravonia a complexity and maturity rarely encountered in white Rioja at the Crianza level.
The 2017 shows a slightly evolved pale-gold color with a fresh yet developed aromatic profile. The palate is dry, fine and beautifully complex, combining mature fruit with savory, nutty and mineral nuances while retaining excellent acidity and freshness. This is a white wine built to evolve—equally compelling with grilled or fried fish, shellfish, richer white meats and aged cheeses.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Founded in 1877 by Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta, R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is one of Rioja’s most historic estates and the oldest winery in Haro. Inspired by the French négociants who came to Rioja during the phylloxera crisis, Rafael recognized the extraordinary potential of the vineyards surrounding Haro and began constructing the cellars that remain at the heart of the estate today.
For generations, the López de Heredia family has remained remarkably faithful to its traditional approach. The estate farms its own historic vineyards and relies on prolonged maturation in oak barrels followed by extensive bottle aging in its underground cellars. Rather than chasing modern styles, the family continues to produce wines according to methods developed over more than a century.
Today, López de Heredia is considered one of the great reference points for traditional Rioja. Its wines—including Viña Tondonia, Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo and Viña Gravonia—are celebrated for their distinctive character, extraordinary longevity and ability to express Rioja through extended aging and meticulous craftsmanship.
