2018 Paolo Scavino Barolo "Carobric" Piedmont, Italy
The 2018 Carobric combines floral perfume with raspberry, licorice, mint and tobacco notes. Full-bodied and savory, it carries concentrated fruit on fine-grained tannins, balancing depth with finesse.
ABOUT THE WINE
Carobric brings together Nebbiolo from three sites: Rocche di Castiglione, Cannubi and Bric del Fiasc. Rocche di Castiglione forms the largest component, with the other vineyards contributing smaller shares. First produced in 1996, the cuvée ended with 2018, Scavino’s final harvest from Cannubi, making this the last vintage of the blend.
The vineyards were vinified separately in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. Each component then spent 12 months in neutral French oak barrels and another 12 months in large casks. After blending, the wine rested for eight months in steel and six months in bottle. Keeping the lots separate through maturation allowed the family to assess their individual character before assembling the finished wine.
The 2018 shows floral perfume, tobacco and leather, with raspberry, licorice and mint on a full, savory palate. Fine-grained tannins support the concentration. We suggest serving it with slow-cooked beef, lamb with herbs or porcini risotto.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Paolo Scavino is a family estate founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Enrico, the next generation, helped shape its modern identity through decades of vineyard study and experimentation. His daughters Enrica and Elisa now carry the family’s work forward.
The estate’s strength lies in its access to varied sites across Barolo and its insistence on treating them individually. Careful farming, separate fermentations and rigorous selection allow the family to compare parcels before deciding how each will be bottled. The resulting range includes both single-vineyard wines and blends that explore how different Nebbiolo sites can complement one another.
