2021 Az. Agr. Fratelli Cigliuti Barbaresco Bricco di Neive "Vie Erte", Piedmont, Italy

From the historic Bricco di Neive cru, the 2021 “Vie Erte” is a poised and age-worthy expression of Nebbiolo. Intensely aromatic, it opens with rose petals, red cherry, and blood orange, layered with notes of crushed herbs, tar, and sweet spice. The palate is structured yet graceful, with firm, finely woven tannins and vibrant acidity supporting a core of luminous red fruit. A mineral-driven backbone carries through to a long, savory, and elegantly persistent finish.

ABOUT THE WINE

“Vie Erte” is sourced from parcels within the prestigious Bricco di Neive vineyard, one of the historic crus of Barbaresco. The hillside’s calcareous-clay soils and optimal southwestern exposures provide ideal conditions for Nebbiolo, yielding wines of aromatic lift, structural precision, and remarkable longevity.

The 2021 vintage in Piedmont is celebrated for its balance—combining ripeness with freshness and refined tannic structure. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve varietal clarity, followed by extended aging in large oak casks and/or neutral barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity while maintaining transparency to terroir. The resulting profile reveals layers of red currant, wild strawberry, dried rose, tobacco, and subtle balsamic nuances.

Classic pairings include braised veal shank, truffle-infused pasta, roasted game, and aged alpine cheeses. While approachable with decanting, this Barbaresco has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next decade or more.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Azienda Agricola Fratelli Cigliuti is a family-run estate based in Neive, a cornerstone commune of the Barbaresco appellation. Established in the 1960s, the winery remains deeply rooted in tradition while embracing meticulous vineyard management and thoughtful, restrained winemaking.

The Cigliuti family prioritizes sustainable farming, low yields, and careful canopy work to ensure optimal fruit quality. In the cellar, their philosophy centers on precision and balance, favoring techniques that highlight vineyard character over overt intervention. “Vie Erte” exemplifies this ethos—an elegant, terroir-driven Barbaresco that speaks clearly of Bricco di Neive and the enduring legacy of the Langhe.
