ABOUT THE WINE
Viuda Negra Crianza is made from Tempranillo grown in vineyards more than twenty years old in Rioja Alavesa. The cuvée brings together several sites, reflecting Javier San Pedro Ortega’s commitment to preserving old vineyards and expressing their character in an accessible estate wine.
The grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel before fourteen months of barrel maturation. The 2022 shows ripe fruit with spice from aging, while the wine’s purpose remains a clear expression of the vineyards rather than oak alone. It is a useful introduction to the producer’s Viuda Negra project and its focus on Rioja Alavesa.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Javier San Pedro Ortega comes from a family with five generations of winegrowing experience in Laguardia. Having learned alongside his family from a young age, he made his first wine at seventeen and later developed a personal project grounded in the vineyards he knew best.
He works with a young team and a contemporary outlook, combining family knowledge with an interest in individual sites and the preservation of older vines. The Viuda Negra wines are central to this philosophy: an evolving collection shaped by the landscapes and winegrowing traditions of Rioja Alavesa.
