2019 Celler Piñol 'Portal' Tinto, Terra Alta, Catalonia, Spain
A bold yet polished Mediterranean red, the 2019 Portal Tinto captures the sun-soaked energy of Terra Alta with finesse and depth. It opens with dense aromas of black cherry, violet, and baking spice, layered over hints of graphite and dried thyme. The palate is full-bodied and supple, framed by fine tannins and fresh acidity, leading to a long, smoky finish with notes of cocoa and garrigue.

ABOUT THE WINE
Celler Piñol’s Portal Tinto is a blend dominated by Garnatxa Negra (Grenache), with Syrah and Merlot adding complexity and backbone. The grapes are sourced from organically farmed vineyards at high elevations (400–600 meters) in Terra Alta, a rugged and wind-swept zone in southern Catalonia known for its old vines and limestone-rich soils. The elevation and diurnal temperature shifts help preserve acidity, balancing the natural richness of the fruit.
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel with native yeasts, followed by aging for 12–14 months in French oak barrels, which imparts subtle spice and structure without overshadowing the wine’s purity. The result is a dark-fruited, earthy red with touches of licorice, leather, and Mediterranean herbs. Versatile and age-worthy, Portal pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, roasted vegetables, or mushroom risotto.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Celler Piñol is a family-run estate located in Batea, the heart of Terra Alta, where four generations have tended vines and championed the potential of this underappreciated region. Deeply committed to sustainable, organic farming and low-intervention winemaking, the Piñol family focuses on native varieties like Garnatxa and Morenillo, while also integrating international grapes that adapt well to the climate and terrain.
Their approach marries tradition with innovation: precise viticulture, meticulous sorting, and restrained use of oak yield wines that speak of both place and personality. Portal is a cornerstone of the estate’s red portfolio, showcasing their ability to craft powerful, elegant wines that reflect the sun, soil, and spirit of Terra Alta.
