2021 Bodega Bernabeleva "Navaherreros" Garnacha, Vinos de Madrid, Spain

Wild sweet berry fruits dominate the nose, with hints of spice, herb, graphite and salinity. A silky smooth entry leads on to full bodied flavours of sweet cherry, raspberry and nutmeg. Despite the big flavours this is still lovely and fresh, with a long finish and fine tannins.

ABOUT THIS WINE

100% Garnacha, 40-80 year old vines.

The grapes used to make this wine are taken from various plots owned by the winery. Given the unique conditions of the various plots, the grapes that make up Navaherreros Garnacha de Bernabeleva are rich and diverse. This way, the diversity of the soils, climates and orientations of the different plots results in a unique wine.

Vineyards are manually harvested. Vinification is minimal intervention and takes place in wood, stainless steel or concrete tanks, depending on the features of the grapes, for each site is vinified and aged separately. All of the must if fermented with wild yeasts and macerates for 5 to 7 weeks, then aged in old oak for 1 year. Unfined and unfiltered.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

In the centre of Spain, a stone’s throw west of Madrid, is Bodegas Bernabeleva.

In 1923, Dr Vicente Álvarez-Villamil bought Bernabeleva, an estate in San Martín de Valdeiglesias (Madrid). At the feet of the Cerro de Guisando and Gredos mountains this winery lets its vines stretch out their roots through the thin infertile sandy soils, formed from decomposed granite, to cling on to life. Four generations have tended these old hardy vines that have repaid the care and attention with quality fruit hand harvested from the organically managed vineyards. Plots of Garnacha, Albillo and Moscatel de Grano Menudo are vinified separately, neither fined nor filtered to ensure that both the land and love shown shine through.

The logo represents the goddess of hunt, to whom, in ancient times, sacred forests were dedicated. In pre Roman cultures, consecration of a forest to this deity was signaled on tree barks or on something more imperishable like stone. Bernabeleva, literally, means the path of the bear, where the bear lives, or next to the bear. There are two primary inspirations in the design of the logo: the nearby Toros de Guisando (which maybe bears, bulls or boars); an old photo of Luisa, the doctor’s daughter, mimicking the myth of Europa and Zeus.
