2020 Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez “La Muria” Tinto, Bierzo, Spain
“La Muria” is a singular, high-elevation expression of Bierzo that captures the quiet power and finesse of old-vine Mencía. Aromas of wild blackberry, crushed violets, and mountain herbs unfold into layers of black cherry, graphite, and subtle spice. The palate is vibrant yet finely structured, with silken tannins, lifted acidity, and a mineral-driven core that carries through to a long, savory finish marked by hints of slate and smoky earth.

ABOUT THE WINE
Crafted by Raúl Pérez, one of Spain’s most respected and intuitive vintners, “La Muria” comes from a tiny, old-vine parcel in Bierzo, nestled in the northwestern corner of Spain. The vineyard sits at altitude, where Atlantic influences meet continental warmth, allowing for slow, even ripening and remarkable aromatic precision.
The wine is composed primarily of Mencía from old, head-trained vines rooted in slate and clay soils. These poor, mineral-rich soils naturally limit yields, concentrating flavor while preserving freshness. Farming is practiced with deep respect for the land—minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar ensures the character of the site speaks clearly.
Fermentation typically occurs with native yeasts, often incorporating whole clusters to enhance aromatic lift and structural nuance. Aging in neutral oak barrels preserves purity of fruit while lending subtle texture rather than overt wood influence. The result is a wine of depth and elegance, balancing dark fruit intensity with floral brightness and earthy complexity.
“La Muria” pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled pork shoulder, mushroom-driven dishes, or aged Manchego. Its vibrant acidity and mineral backbone also make it a compelling companion to richer seafood preparations, such as grilled octopus with smoked paprika.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez reflects the restless curiosity and artisanal ethos of Raúl Pérez himself. Born into a winemaking family in Bierzo, Pérez has become a leading figure in Spain’s movement toward terroir-driven, minimally manipulated wines. His philosophy centers on expressing individual vineyard sites through gentle handling, native fermentations, and restrained use of oak.
Working with old vines across Bierzo and neighboring regions, Pérez champions biodiversity, low yields, and organic-leaning viticulture. Rather than imposing a house style, he allows each parcel to define its own voice. “La Muria” stands as a testament to this philosophy—an authentic, site-specific wine that captures both the rugged landscape and the quiet refinement of Bierzo.
