2020 Boroli Barolo "Comune di Castiglione Falletto", Piedmont, Italy

ABOUT THIS WINE

This Barolo is made of 100% Nebbiolo, and is designed to express the character of Castiglione Falletto, one of the historic communes at the center of the Barolo region. It’s a relatively new bottling for Boroli, created after years of studying and zoning the estate’s vineyards to identify parcels that best represent the commune. 

The sites have east, west, and southwest exposures, with clay/limestone soils containing traces of sand. The vines are approximately 15-30 years old and trained to Guyot. Castiglione Falletto tends to give Nebbiolo a compelling combination of structure and finesse, and Boroli specifically positions this bottling around that balance.

The fruit is harvested by hand, with the vineyards divided into micro-parcels according to ripeness and vinified separately. After destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel for roughly 10-12 days, followed by an extended submerged-cap maceration of about 20-25 days. Boroli notes that individual lots can remain on the skins for as long as 30 days. Malolactic fermentation also occurs in stainless steel. The wine then spends 18 months in large 1,500–2,500-liter oak casks. The individual micro-cuvées are subsequently blended, bottled around June or July, and given at least another year of bottle aging before release.

Boroli is a family-owned estate in Castiglione Falletto, in the heart of Piedmont’s Langhe. Founded in the 1990s, the winery is dedicated to expressing the character of Nebbiolo and the remarkable vineyards of Barolo, with prized holdings in celebrated crus including Villero and Cerequio, as well as Brunella, a vineyard exclusively owned by the Boroli family.

Today, Achille Boroli leads the estate with a thoughtful, vineyard-first approach, combining traditional Barolo winemaking with modern precision. Low yields, careful farming, long macerations, and patient aging allow each site to shine, producing wines that capture Barolo’s signature perfume, structure, and elegance while remaining beautifully expressive of place.
