2020 Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy Gevrey-Chambertin "En Jouise", Burgundy, France
This 2020 “En Jouise” bottling from Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy is a classic Gevrey-Chambertin that beautifully marries power with finesse. Offering aromas of wild cherry, crushed rose petal, forest floor, and subtle spice, it opens with silky texture and refined structure. The palate is marked by pure red berry fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a mineral-laced core, finishing with elegance and savory persistence.
ABOUT THE WINE
“En Jouise” is a lieux-dit in the northern sector of Gevrey-Chambertin, nestled just below the premier cru slopes. This particular plot is characterized by well-draining clay-limestone soils that contribute to the wine’s vibrancy and depth. Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy farms this site with traditional methods, including manual harvesting and lutte raisonnée (sustainable viticulture), allowing the vineyard’s voice to speak clearly. The 2020 vintage saw a warm and dry growing season, resulting in small, concentrated berries with excellent phenolic maturity. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats, followed by aging in French oak barrels, around one-third new, for approximately 18 months. The wine displays lifted aromatics—redcurrant, black cherry, and hints of sous-bois—layered with spice and crushed rock. Balanced and structured, it is a versatile companion to dishes such as duck breast, mushroom risotto, or herb-roasted chicken.
