2020 Matt Taylor "Kaela" Pinot Noir, West Sonoma Coast, California USA

The 2020 Matt Taylor “Kaela” Pinot Noir is a beautifully lifted, cool-climate expression of the West Sonoma Coast, balancing vivid red fruit with savory complexity and coastal minerality. Aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, and cranberry mingle with violet, forest floor, tea leaf, and subtle spice. The palate is silky and energetic, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity, and a long, savory finish that combines red fruit, earthy nuance, and saline minerality.

ABOUT THIS WINE

“Kaela” is a site-driven Pinot Noir from the West Sonoma Coast, one of California's coolest and most maritime-influenced growing regions. Persistent Pacific fog, strong coastal winds, and relatively low temperatures create a long, slow growing season, allowing Pinot Noir to develop aromatic complexity and concentration while retaining naturally vibrant acidity.

Matt Taylor's winemaking emphasizes transparency and restraint. The fruit is hand-harvested and carefully sorted, then fermented with native yeasts using gentle extraction to preserve the delicate perfume and fine tannins of coastal Pinot Noir. Aging in French oak is deliberately balanced, allowing subtle spice and texture to develop without overwhelming the wine's bright fruit and mineral character.

The 2020 vintage shows the freshness and savory complexity that define the West Sonoma Coast, with ripe but not heavy fruit and a particularly graceful structure. It is drinking beautifully now, while its acidity and tannin provide additional aging potential. Pair it with roast duck, grilled salmon, pork tenderloin, wild mushrooms, roast chicken, or dishes accented with thyme and other earthy herbs.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Matt Taylor Wines is the project of winemaker Matt Taylor, whose work focuses on cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from distinctive sites along California's North Coast. His winemaking philosophy is strongly influenced by the traditional wines of Burgundy, with an emphasis on vineyard character, freshness, and balance rather than ripeness or heavy extraction.

Taylor works closely with growers and carefully selected vineyard sites, favoring sustainable farming and fruit harvested for natural acidity and aromatic complexity. In the cellar, native fermentation, gentle handling, and restrained oak allow the character of each site to remain prominent.
