ABOUT THIS WINE

The 2020 "The Matriarch" White is a characterful blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, and Chenin Blanc from high-altitude vineyards in South Africa’s Breedekloof region. Grown on decomposed shale and granite soils in a dry, wind-swept environment, the fruit benefits from cool nighttime temperatures that preserve freshness and build aromatic complexity.

The wine is gently pressed, with selective skin contact on certain parcels and fermentation in older oak barrels. Extended aging on fine lees adds depth and a creamy mouthfeel, balancing the naturally vibrant acidity and mineral precision.

Aromatically, the wine offers layers of citrus peel, yellow apple, fennel seed, and wet stone, with underlying notes of white tea and dried herbs. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and textural, with orchard fruit, lemon curd, and a fine phenolic grip that leads to a persistent, savory finish.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Olifantsberg is a small, family-run estate perched on the rocky slopes above the Breedekloof Valley in the Western Cape. Committed to sustainable and site-sensitive farming, the estate focuses on Mediterranean and Rhône varieties that thrive in the region’s dry conditions and varied soils.

The winemaking is low-intervention, with a focus on capturing purity and freshness while building structure through natural fermentation, gentle handling, and minimal use of new oak. The wines reflect the estate’s high-altitude, wind-exposed terroir—linear, focused, and full of energy.
