2020 Patrimony "Caves de Lions" Red Blend, Adelaida District, Paso Robles, California, USA
A commanding and luxurious red blend, the 2020 Caves des Lions showcases the bold elegance that defines Patrimony's elite terroir-driven expression. Rich aromas of cassis, violets, graphite, and exotic spices rise from the glass, while the palate is saturated with layers of blackberry, dark chocolate, crème de cassis, and finely integrated oak. Full-bodied yet impeccably polished, the wine delivers silky tannins, bright acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish that echoes with power and poise.
ABOUT THIS WINE
Crafted with meticulous detail by the Daou brothers, the 2020 Caves des Lions is a sophisticated blend primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by a touch of Cabernet Franc. Grapes are hand-harvested from the highest elevations of the Adelaida District—an area known for its limestone-rich soils and extreme diurnal shifts—resulting in grapes with tremendous intensity and natural acidity. The wine is fermented with native yeasts and aged in 100% new French oak barrels for nearly 30 months, allowing a seamless integration of fruit and oak while preserving purity and elegance.
The bouquet is intensely perfumed—violets, fresh tobacco, crushed stone, and dark berries—while the palate delivers opulent textures framed by remarkable structure. Despite its richness, the wine retains a vibrant core, suggesting a long aging potential. Decanting is recommended to allow the wine to reveal its full aromatic and textural complexity.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Patrimony Estate, a pinnacle project by Georges and Daniel Daou of DAOU Vineyards, represents their uncompromising pursuit of a First Growth–level wine in California. Inspired by Bordeaux's Grand Cru estates, the Daou brothers planted their vineyards at high altitudes in the rugged hills of Paso Robles, where calcareous soils and marine influences mimic the Right Bank’s greatest terroirs. Their commitment to organic and sustainable farming, paired with a minimal-interventionist approach in the cellar, has placed Patrimony among California’s most collectible and age-worthy producers.
The name Caves des Lions—“Lion’s Caves”—reflects both a family heritage and the noble strength embodied in the wine. Each bottling is a tribute to bold ambition and refined craftsmanship, making Patrimony one of the most compelling forces in American fine wine today.
