2020 Roagna Barolo "Pira", Piedmont, Italy
The 2020 Roagna Barolo “Pira” is a beautifully complex and traditionally crafted expression of Nebbiolo from Castiglione Falletto, offering aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, and dried rose petals layered with notes of orange peel, licorice, leather, tobacco, and earthy spice. The palate is structured and elegant, with vibrant acidity, finely grained tannins, and concentrated red fruit balanced by savory notes of tar, iron, and dried herbs. Powerful yet remarkably refined, the wine builds toward a long, persistent finish marked by mineral depth, floral nuances, and lingering spice. This is a classic Barolo that combines the depth of its vineyard with the precision and age-worthy structure characteristic of Roagna.

ABOUT THIS WINE
Produced from 100% Nebbiolo, the 2020 Barolo “Pira” comes from Roagna’s historic vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, a central village in the Barolo appellation. The vineyard features a complex combination of limestone, gray and blue marl, sand, and iron-rich soils, contributing both structure and aromatic complexity. The vines are propagated through massal selection using plant material from older vines within the vineyard, preserving the genetic diversity and character of the site. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted before fermentation with indigenous yeasts in large wooden vats. Roagna employs an extended submerged-cap maceration lasting approximately 60–70 days, extracting depth and structure while allowing the tannins to develop gradually. The wine then matures for around five years in large, neutral oak casks and concrete vessels, without the influence of new oak. The 2020 vintage combines ripe red fruit and expressive aromatics with firm tannins, freshness, and the mineral complexity that defines this celebrated vineyard.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Roagna is a historic family-owned winery based in Barbaresco, Piedmont, with a winemaking heritage dating to the late nineteenth century. Today, Luca Roagna continues the family's traditional approach, focusing on old vines, biodiversity, indigenous yeasts, extended maceration, and patient aging. The estate works with historic vineyard sites across Barbaresco and Barolo, including Pajè, Asili, Montefico, and Pira, with each wine intended to express the distinctive character of its origin. Roagna's cellar philosophy favors large, neutral oak vessels over new barriques, allowing the wines to develop slowly while preserving their natural aromatics and structure. The resulting Barolos and Barbarescos are known for their complexity, fine tannins, and remarkable aging potential. “Pira” is a particularly important wine for the estate, showcasing the balance of power, elegance, and mineral depth that has made Roagna a reference point for traditional Nebbiolo.
