2020 Weingut Josef Spreitzer “Rosengarten”, Riesling GG, Rheingau, Germany
The 2020 Weingut Josef Spreitzer “Rosengarten” Riesling Grosses Gewächs (GG) greets the senses with floral aromas of white flowers, apricots, and mirabelle plums. On the palate, it offers a delicate interplay of fine sweetness and ripe acidity, leading to a juicy core with mineral spice and a salty aftertaste. The finish is long and promises excellent aging potential.
ABOUT THE WINE
Sourced from the Rosengarten vineyard, a monopole of Weingut Josef Spreitzer located in Oestrich, Rheingau, this Riesling reflects the unique terroir of calcareous loam and shell limestone soils. The vineyard's proximity to the Rhine River contributes to the wine's distinctive character. Fermentation occurs in old, traditional Fuder casks, allowing for a nuanced expression of the vineyard's attributes.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Established in 1641, Weingut Josef Spreitzer is one of the oldest wineries in the Rheingau region. Since 1997, brothers Andreas and Bernd Spreitzer have been at the helm, blending centuries-old traditions with modern innovations. The estate spans 17 hectares, predominantly planted with Riesling (97%) and a small portion of Pinot Noir. Committed to natural, environmentally friendly viticulture, the Spreitzers employ practices such as intensive cover cropping and minimal pruning to ensure physiologically ripe grapes. Their meticulous approach in the cellar includes whole-cluster pressing, slow fermentation with ambient yeasts in both wooden casks and stainless steel tanks, and extended lees aging to preserve the wine's integrity and expressiveness.
