2021 Alsina & Sardà Cava Gran Reserva Brut Nature, Pénedes, Spain

In the glass, Alsina & Sardà’s Gran Reserva Brut Nature shows aromas in the citrus-and-orchard-fruit register (lemon peel, green apple, quince) layered with the toasty, bready complexity that comes from extended lees time—brioche, fresh pastry, and subtle honeyed and nutty hints. Notes of dried flowers and fennel lift the nose; the palate is brisk and creamy at once, with a fine, persistent bead, mid-palate breadth, and a dry, mouth-watering finish that’s more savory than sweet.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Cava (Penedès, Catalunya) that sits at the drier end of the spectrum and emphasizes purity over sweetness. The estate bottles two “Gran Reserva Brut Nature” labels: the long-running Sello cuvée (traditional Cava grapes) and a Gran Reserva Especial Brut Nature (often released with a vintage, and widely listed for 2021). Both qualify as Gran Reserva—meaning at least 30 months’ aging on the lees—and Brut Nature indicates 0–3 g/L residual sugar.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

The producer is a family estate rooted in El Pla del Penedès whose vine-growing history dates to the 19th century; the family began bottling its own cavas in the early 1980s and works a patchwork of limestone- and clay-soiled parcels around Sant Sadurní d’Anoia. Today three generations are involved, and the style favors clarity, long lees aging, and traditional-method craftsmanship.
