The 2021 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru comes from Domaine Armand Rousseau’s 1.42 hectares of this legendary Gevrey-Chambertin vineyard. The domaine’s fruit comes from two parcels, with the principal parcel situated in the upper section of the climat. The east-facing vineyard is particularly rich in limestone, with a complex mix of Bathonian calcareous clay, Bajocian limestone and marl. These soils contribute to the extraordinary finesse and mineral character for which Clos de Bèze is known.
The cooler 2021 growing season produced a particularly elegant expression of Clos de Bèze. The wine shows beautiful red and black fruit, floral notes, oriental spice and earthy minerality, with a silky, refined texture and impressive depth. At Rousseau, Clos de Bèze is traditionally considered the more graceful and seductive counterpart to Chambertin—less about sheer power and more about perfume, complexity and finesse. Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of the most revered estates in Burgundy and a benchmark producer of Gevrey-Chambertin. Founded in the early 20th century by Armand Rousseau, the domaine was also among the pioneering Burgundy estates to estate-bottle its wines and develop an international market rather than selling its production primarily through négociants.
Today, the domaine is led by the Rousseau family, with Eric Rousseau and his daughter Cyrielle continuing the work of previous generations.
