2021 Domaine Ostertag Riesling "Le Berceau Lieu-Dit Pflanzer", Alsace, France
A finely etched, deeply mineral dry Riesling from the limestone-rich Pflanzer vineyard, Le Berceau shows the more intimate, terroir-driven side of Domaine Ostertag. Aromas of lemon peel, green apple, white peach, wildflowers, and fresh herbs unfold over crushed stone and a subtle smoky note. The palate is taut and precise, with vivid acidity, concentrated citrus fruit, and a firm mineral backbone. Dry, energetic, and quietly complex, it finishes long and saline with lingering citrus and stony tension.

ABOUT THE WINE
Le Berceau is made from 100% Riesling grown in the lieu-dit Pflanzer, near the village of Epfig in Alsace. The name Le Berceau, meaning “the cradle,” reflects the vineyard’s special place within the Ostertag family story: Pflanzer is closely connected to the origins of the domaine and represents one of its historic vineyard holdings.
The site’s limestone-rich soils are central to the wine’s personality. Riesling responds particularly well here, producing a style less focused on exuberant fruit than on tension, citrus precision, and a distinctly chalky, saline mineral character. The cool 2021 vintage further accentuated those qualities. After a run of warmer growing seasons in Alsace, 2021 delivered wines with particularly vivid natural acidity, moderate ripeness, and classical aromatic definition.
The vineyard is farmed according to biodynamic principles, with work carried out by hand and an emphasis on living soils, biodiversity, and allowing each site to develop its own equilibrium. Grapes are harvested manually, and cellar intervention is kept deliberately restrained. Fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and élevage is designed to preserve the transparency of the vineyard rather than introduce obvious winemaking signatures.
Le Berceau sits within Ostertag’s philosophy of treating wine as an expression not simply of grape variety, but of place, soil, farming, and vintage. The result is a Riesling with enough concentration to develop in bottle, while its naturally high acidity and mineral structure provide excellent longevity. Enjoy it now with air for its citrus and stony energy, or cellar it to develop more complex notes of dried herbs, beeswax, and mature Riesling spice.
Serve around 48–52°F (9–11°C) with oysters, shellfish, grilled trout, pike-perch, sushi, choucroute, roast poultry, goat cheese, or vegetable dishes featuring fennel and herbs. Its dry profile and strong mineral structure also make it particularly successful with richer freshwater fish and classic Alsatian cuisine.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Domaine Ostertag was founded in 1966 by Adolphe Ostertag in Epfig, in the Bas-Rhin portion of Alsace. His son André Ostertag joined the domaine in 1980 and became one of the region’s most influential modern winegrowers, challenging conventional distinctions between grape variety, vineyard, and winemaking while placing extraordinary emphasis on the individuality of each site. Today, the next generation, including Arthur Ostertag, continues the family’s work.
The domaine farms a mosaic of small vineyard parcels around Epfig and neighboring villages, encompassing a remarkable diversity of sandstone, clay, limestone, and volcanic soils. This geological variation is fundamental to Ostertag’s approach: wines are conceived according to the character of their vineyards, with viticulture and cellar decisions adapted to each site rather than imposed through a uniform formula.
Ostertag has practiced biodynamic viticulture since the late 1990s, viewing the vineyard as a living ecosystem and farming without synthetic herbicides or systemic chemical treatments. Handwork, low yields, indigenous fermentations, and restrained cellar intervention are all used in pursuit of wines that communicate their origins with clarity.
One of the domaine’s defining qualities is its willingness to combine Alsatian tradition with a highly personal, intuitive approach to élevage. Yet with Riesling, the focus remains especially sharp: acidity, mineral structure, and vineyard identity take precedence over winemaking embellishment. The 2021 Le Berceau is a compelling example—an understated but serious Riesling in which Pflanzer’s limestone soils, biodynamic farming, and the cool precision of the vintage come together with remarkable clarity.
