2021 Donatella Cinelli Colombini Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
A classic Tuscan Sangiovese from Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino. Ripe berry aromas meet notes of spice and vanilla, with an elegant, harmonious palate and firm tannins. Aged for at least two years in oak, this Brunello brings depth and structure to the table.
ABOUT THE WINE
Made entirely from Sangiovese, this Brunello comes from Casato Prime Donne on the northern side of Montalcino. The organically cultivated vineyards sit around 225 meters above sea level, with clay-rich soils and a sunny exposure. Harvest timing is guided by tasting the grapes, and selection takes place both in the vineyard and on the cellar sorting table.
The estate works with small, open-top fermentation vessels and gentle cap punching, using spontaneous fermentation alongside selected local yeasts. Maturation moves through French oak tonneaux and larger casks for at least two years, followed by bottle refinement. In 2021, ripe berry and plum notes meet nutmeg, black pepper and a touch of marzipan. A balanced, rounded palate retains a firm tannin frame and a juicy finish. Pair with roast beef, game or aged Pecorino.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Donatella Cinelli Colombini received the family’s Casato property in 1998 and renamed it Casato Prime Donne. The land has passed through generations of her family, including her grandmother and mother; her grandfather Giovanni Colombini was among Montalcino’s Brunello pioneers.
Donatella established an entirely female winery team, with winemaker Valérie Lavigne and daughter Violante Gardini among the women shaping its work. This commitment to women’s leadership sits alongside a practical focus on organic cultivation, hand work and preserving local character. The estate’s trials with indigenous yeasts and careful selection of oak vessels reflect that balance of tradition and considered innovation.
