2022/23 Gundlach Bundschu "Mountain Cuvée", Sonoma County, California, USA
The 2023 Mountain Cuvee presents as a love letter to Bordeaux grapes a medium-bodied red blend with complex and distinct layers of red fruit and cedar. Star anise, cinnamon stick and oregano oil on the nose give way to notes of unsweetened chilled cherry galette, raspberry preserve and woodsy boysenberry. Best paired with a Wood Grilled Porkchop drenched in rosemary butter, a traditional Mediterranean Lamb Kofta with humas on fresh pita, or a Mushroom al Pastor.

ABOUT THIS WINE
The "Mountain Cuvée" is Gundlach Bundschu's flagship Bordeaux-inspired blend, typically composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, with the final proportions varying by vintage. Fruit is sourced from the winery's sustainably farmed estate vineyards in Sonoma Valley and select vineyards throughout Sonoma County, where warm days, cool evenings, and well-drained volcanic and alluvial soils produce fruit with both concentration and freshness.
Each variety is harvested and vinified separately to preserve its unique character before the final blend is assembled. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, with a modest percentage of new oak adding structure and complexity while allowing the fruit to remain the focal point. The result is a balanced, approachable red that combines Cabernet Sauvignon's structure with the plush texture of Merlot and the aromatic lift of Cabernet Franc.
The 2023 vintage offers generous dark fruit, refined tannins, and excellent freshness, making it enjoyable upon release while capable of developing additional complexity over the next 5–8 years. It pairs beautifully with grilled steaks, braised short ribs, lamb, roasted mushrooms, or aged cheeses.
