2022 Joseph Voillot Pommard 1er Cru "Les Pèzerolles", Burgundy, France
Elegant yet quietly powerful, the 2022 “Les Pèzerolles” is a refined expression of Pommard’s more delicate side. Perfumed with red cherry, rose petal, and warm spice, it opens into a silky, layered palate where fine-grained tannins meet lifted acidity and a stony mineral edge. This is a Premier Cru that offers both structure and finesse, revealing its complexity with air or time in bottle.
ABOUT THIS WINE
“Les Pèzerolles” is one of Pommard’s northernmost Premier Cru sites, lying just above Les Grands Epenots and bordering Volnay. Its higher elevation, lighter clay-limestone soils, and cooler exposition give rise to a more refined and aromatic style of Pommard—often noted for its floral lift and supple tannins rather than brute force. In the hands of Joseph Voillot, a master of understatement and terroir purity, the vineyard delivers a wine of great balance and aging potential.
The 2022 vintage offered ideal ripening conditions: warm but not excessive, with healthy yields and vibrant natural acidity. Voillot’s winemaking is traditional and low-intervention—fermentation with indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction, and élevage in mostly older oak barrels (no more than 15–20% new). The result is a wine that speaks clearly of its origin: lifted aromatics, textural finesse, and mineral precision.
Ideal with roasted duck, veal, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses. This wine will evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity without losing its poise.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Domaine Joseph Voillot, based in Volnay, is one of Burgundy’s quiet benchmarks—an estate prized by purists for its authenticity, restraint, and unwavering focus on terroir. Now run by Étienne Chaix, the nephew of the late Joseph Voillot, the domaine continues its tradition of thoughtful, non-interventionist winemaking across holdings in Volnay, Pommard, and beyond.
Farming is sustainable, with meticulous vineyard care and hand-harvesting, while cellar work is minimalist: native yeasts, gentle maceration, and aging in used barrels to avoid oak masking the wines’ natural expressions. Voillot’s style favors elegance over extraction, making even robust sites like Pommard sing with clarity and grace. “Les Pèzerolles” is a standout in the lineup—capturing both the structure of Pommard and the finesse typical of its Volnay-adjacent terroir.
