ABOUT THIS WINE
Edición Familia was born from the winemaker's desire to create a classic Bordeaux blend with grapes from the oldest vineyards planted in our vineyard. A wine that reflects the potential of the varieties and the quality of the fruit we receive harvest after harvest, making it a tribute to the winemaking tradition of the Hartwig family.
Petit Verdot plays the role of giving the center of the mouth, fatness, depth of color and perfumed aromas. Cabernet Franc represents the tannins and the structure that generates tension and support. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes the juiciness, vibrancy and acidity necessary for the wine to feel alive and have longevity, in addition to all the fruitiness and aromatic elegance. Malbec finally covers the wine with velvet, silkiness, and aromas of flowers and purple fruits.
The composition of the blend varies depending on the vintage, as there are strains that benefit from cooler years, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, and others that express themselves better in warm years, such as Petit Verdot. The 2021 blend is Petit Verdot 47%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25%, Malbec 19%, and Cabernet Franc 9%. 20 months aging in new and second-use French oak barrels.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
From the producer: "Viña Laura Hartwig is located in the heart of the Colchagua Valley,
just steps from Santa Cruz. We have 145 hectares (358 acres) planted with vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Carménère, Malbec, Syrah and Petit Verdot. The first vineyards were planted in 1978, which also included Chardonnay. Since then, we have gradually increased the planted area.
Bordeaux vines have naturally adapted to the Colchagua terroir and thrive in the region, offering wines of great varietal character. The valley is known as the home of Carménère, the lost variety of Bordeaux and emblematic of Chile, which has done particularly well in our vineyard. The soils in our field have been formed under conditions of slow lake sedimentation. They are flat, deep soils with clayey loam textures in their surface layers and sandy in depth.
Alejandro Hartwig is a winegrower and personally sees the care of the vines. For him, our wines reflect the evolution of the work carried out in the vineyard over the years, since after trial and error, he was able to improve the orientation, density and irrigation techniques throughout the field. A temperate climate, clay soils and a team of people with a long history have allowed us to develop sustainably and manage agricultural products in a friendly manner. Although we are not certified, we practice low-impact viticulture."
