ABOUT THIS WINE

The 2021 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW is a single-vineyard Riesling from Kamptal, Austria, and one of Schloss Gobelsburg’s most important site-specific wines. Heiligenstein is classified 1ÖTW Erste Lage by the Österreichische Traditionsweingüter, recognizing it as one of the region’s top vineyard sites.

Ried Heiligenstein lies near Zöbing, with terraced vineyards particularly well suited to Riesling. What makes the site exceptional is its unusual “Zöbinger Perm” geology: ancient sandstone, silt, arkose and organic sediments. Some of Schloss Gobelsburg’s oldest Riesling vineyards are located here. These relatively lean, rocky soils help produce Rieslings known for concentration, precision, pronounced minerality and impressive longevity.

The grapes are whole-cluster pressed and fermented in traditional large oak casks, followed by 18 months of maturation in 5,000L Manhartsberg oak, with extended lees aging. The large-format oak and long élevage contributes creaminess, depth and texture without masking Heiligenstein’s citrus, stone-fruit and mineral character.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Weingut Schloss Gobelsburg is one of Austria’s most historic and revered estates, dating back to 1171 and deeply influenced by Cistercian monks who tended the vineyards for centuries. Today, under the stewardship of Michael Moosbrugger, the estate blends monastic traditions with modern precision to craft wines of profound elegance and terroir expression. Certified sustainable and biodynamically farmed in practice, the winery follows time-honored methods, including gravity-fed cellars and low-intervention vinification. Their Cistercien Rosé honors the contemplative, minimalist spirit of its monastic roots—eschewing overt fruitiness in favor of poise, purity, and quiet depth. Schloss Gobelsburg is a benchmark for Austrian winemaking, known for its deep respect for vineyard heritage and a philosophy rooted in balance, authenticity, and timeless refinement.
