ABOUT THE WINE

The 2021 Bullnose Syrah showcases the finesse and structure that have made Te Mata’s Syrah one of New Zealand’s most iconic single-varietal reds. Grown on the famed Bullnose Vineyard in the Bridge Pa Triangle—an inland subregion of Hawke’s Bay known for its free-draining, alluvial gravels and warm climate—the fruit benefits from long, even ripening conditions ideal for Syrah. Hand-harvested and meticulously sorted, the grapes underwent traditional vinification with whole bunch inclusion to enhance aromatic lift and texture. Aged in a mix of new and seasoned French oak barrels, the wine shows refined layers of blueberry, damson plum, black pepper, star anise, and a touch of cedar.

This vintage displays a balance of ripeness and tension, offering a lithe, medium-bodied frame that finishes with notes of smoked herbs and crushed stone. Its elegance and spice profile make it a natural partner to dishes like lamb with rosemary, venison carpaccio, or grilled eggplant with harissa.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Established in 1896, Te Mata Estate is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most respected wineries. Still family-owned and operated, the estate has long been a champion of site-expressive wines with a restrained, classical aesthetic. Sustainability and minimal intervention underpin the farming across their estate vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, with a deep focus on soil health, vine balance, and heritage clones.

The Bullnose Syrah is a flagship wine born from the estate’s pioneering work with Syrah in New Zealand, inspired by the Rhône Valley but interpreted through Hawke’s Bay terroir. The name “Bullnose” comes from the vintage Jaguar car owned by one of the winery founders—its curved front end reflecting the wine’s sleek elegance. Te Mata’s reputation rests on precision, purity, and the ability to age gracefully—hallmarks fully embodied in this standout 2021 release.
