ABOUT THE WINE
The 2021 Coleraine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, sourced from Te Mata’s oldest hillside vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, where gravelly soils and maritime influence create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. A warm, dry vintage in 2021 delivered exceptional ripeness with structure and finesse.
Fermented in traditional open-top concrete and stainless steel fermenters, followed by 18 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques, the wine was bottled unfined and lightly filtered. The result is a wine of aromatic precision and layered depth — cassis, black cherry, and damson wrapped in graphite, cocoa, and subtle oak spice. The tannins are tightly woven yet polished, and acidity lends tension and drive.
Coleraine is best enjoyed with dry-aged beef, slow-cooked lamb shoulder, or truffle-infused mushroom dishes, and it is structured to reward cellaring for 15–25 years. It’s a reference-point red from the Southern Hemisphere, echoing the pedigree and longevity of top Left Bank Bordeaux.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Te Mata Estate is one of New Zealand’s oldest wineries, established in 1896, and remains family-owned and operated. Located in the heart of Hawke’s Bay, it has been a pioneer in crafting age-worthy wines of classical style. Te Mata is renowned for its commitment to estate-grown fruit, sustainable farming, and restrained, traditional winemaking.
The estate’s hallmark wine, Coleraine, was first produced in 1982, and quickly established itself as New Zealand’s most iconic red. Te Mata’s approach is rooted in expressing site and season, with minimal intervention in the winery and a long-term focus on wine that speaks of origin. Their vineyards are managed with a strong emphasis on soil health, biodiversity, and low yields, ensuring concentration and purity in every bottle.
