2021 The Walls "Stanley Groovy", Red Mountain, Washington, USA
A bold yet playful Iberian-inspired blend, the 2021 Stanley Groovy from The Walls showcases Red Mountain’s sun-soaked intensity with a distinctly Old World flair. Aromas of black cherry, plum, and blueberry are layered with lavender, cured meat, and sweet spice. The palate is plush and full-bodied, with ripe, dark fruit wrapped in firm but polished tannins, balanced by lively acidity and a long, savory finish. Both vibrant and structured, it’s a wine with personality and power.
ABOUT THIS WINE
Stanley Groovy is a unique blend centered on Portuguese varieties like Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cão, and Souzão, grown in Washington’s Red Mountain AVA—an unlikely but highly successful setting for these grapes. The warm, dry climate, moderated by evening breezes from the Columbia River, produces fruit of deep color, ripe tannins, and vibrant natural acidity.
The 2021 vintage was warm and consistent, yielding small, concentrated berries with excellent balance. Grapes were hand-harvested, fermented with native yeasts, and aged in a mix of French oak barrels (a portion new) for 16–18 months. The blend shifts slightly each year, but Touriga Nacional usually provides floral lift and structure, while Souzão adds acidity and deep color, and Tinta Cão contributes savory spice and finesse.
The wine offers intensity without heaviness—juicy dark fruit, violets, and spice balanced by freshness and minerality. Built for both early enjoyment and aging, it will evolve gracefully over 10–12 years.
