ABOUT THIS WINE

This wine, made from Grenache, or "Cannonau," as it's called in Sardinia, comes from 20+ year old vines from the Fittiloghe vineyard. This specific vineyard has a Southeastern exposure, and peaks at 700m elevation. The soils here are predominantly granitic - they are very poor, sandy and well drained, causing roots to dig deeper and work harder.  Grapes are hand harvested in mid-September. Fermentation is spontaneous with a 15-day maceration. After maceration, the grapes are soft pressed, then matured for 1 year in 50 HL neutral French oak, one year in stainless steel, and a minimum of 6 months in the bottle before release.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Vike Vike is the winery of Simone Sedilesu, located in his home territory of Mamoiada within Barbagia, Sardinia.  Simone grew up in the vineyard, having learned viticulture and vinification from his father and grandfather. Simone left Sardinia, earned a degree in oenology, worked in wine in South Africa, and returned to Mamoaida to start his winery in 2015. He farms 4.5 hectares of organic vineyards of Cannonau and Granazza (a distinct native white variety), in this largely unknown region of Sardinia.

All vineyards are vinified separately, allowing for the most distinct expression of Ghiradas — the region’s vineyard classification system analogous to Etna’s Contradas. Each Ghirada represents a particular story of viticulture that has been handed down from generation to generation. Mamoiada has 6 subzones — Zona Nord, Zona Nord Est, Zona Est, Zona Sud, Zona Sud Ovest, and Zona Nord Ovest. These subzones are then inclusive of several Ghiradas. All of Simone’s vineyards are within the Zona Sud.

VikeVike means Surprise Surprise’ or Look Look’ in the local dialect, as the hope is that the wines of Vike Vike invoke wonder and interest for Mamoaida. A hidden gem region with incredibly passionate, rising-star winemakers, the future of Mamoiada is insanely bright with firecrackers like Simone leading the charge.
