2022 Aurélien Chatagnier "La Sybarite" Saint Joseph, Rhône Valley, France
Vibrant yet composed, the 2022 “La Sybarite” captures the essence of northern Rhône Syrah—perfumed, peppery, and precise. Aromas of black cherry, violet, cracked black pepper, and smoked olive unfold with lifted energy, while the palate is sleek and mineral-driven, with fine-grained tannins and a cool-toned, graphite-laced finish. A beautifully restrained expression of Saint-Joseph from one of the region’s rising stars.

ABOUT THE WINE
Sourced from hillside parcels in the northern reaches of the Saint-Joseph appellation, “La Sybarite” is 100% Syrah grown on steep granite slopes at altitudes ranging from 250 to 400 meters. In 2022, a warm but balanced growing season produced Syrah with excellent ripeness and aromatic complexity, while retaining freshness. Fermentation was spontaneous with native yeasts, using whole clusters for added lift and structure. The wine was aged for 12 months in used French oak barrels (no new wood), preserving Syrah’s purity and sense of place. Expect a finely etched profile of wild blackberry, black pepper, cured meat, and crushed stone. The wine is medium-bodied but taut, with freshness and nerve that make it a compelling partner for roast lamb, duck with black olives, or grilled eggplant with rosemary. Drink now or cellar for 8–10 years.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Aurélien Chatagnier is one of the most talented young vignerons in the northern Rhône, having founded his eponymous domaine in 2002 at just 20 years old. Based in Saint-Pierre-de-Boeuf near Condrieu, he works organically across several appellations, including Saint-Joseph, Cornas, and Côte-Rôtie. His approach is marked by precision, restraint, and respect for terroir—working with low yields, native yeasts, and minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar. Whole-cluster fermentation, used barrels, and a light hand define his style, yielding wines that are pure, elegant, and transparent. “La Sybarite” is a standout in his lineup: expressive yet poised, a Syrah that speaks softly but with conviction.
