2022 Château Rocher-Calon Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux, France
A polished, generous Saint-Émilion that pairs the richness of the warm 2022 vintage with the freshness and structure of Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Ripe black cherry, plum, cassis, and violet lead into notes of cedar, sweet spice, and subtle earth. The palate is supple and rounded, framed by fine-grained tannins and balancing acidity, with dark fruit and savory spice lingering on a smooth, persistent finish.

ABOUT THE WINE
Château Rocher-Calon is a Merlot-led Bordeaux blend from Saint-Émilion, where Merlot thrives in the appellation’s clay- and limestone-influenced soils. Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon provide additional aromatic lift, freshness, and structure, creating a classic Right Bank profile in which plush fruit is balanced by savory complexity.
The 2022 Bordeaux growing season was exceptionally warm and dry, producing small, concentrated berries with ripe tannins and impressive depth of flavor. In Saint-Émilion, vineyards with clay-rich soils were particularly well positioned to retain moisture through the drought. The resulting wines frequently combine the vintage’s abundant dark fruit and concentration with enough freshness to maintain definition and balance.
Traditional red-wine vinification emphasizes extraction of color, fruit, and tannin from the skins, followed by maturation designed to soften the wine and bring its components together. In the glass, Rocher-Calon offers the immediate appeal of ripe Merlot while retaining the structure expected of Saint-Émilion. It can be enjoyed now with a short decant, while several years of bottle age should allow its fruit, spice, and earthy nuances to integrate further.
Pair with roast beef, grilled lamb, duck, braised short ribs, mushroom dishes, lentils, or aged cheeses. Its combination of ripe fruit, savory character, and polished tannins makes it especially comfortable alongside classic French bistro fare.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Château Rocher-Calon is a small Bordeaux estate associated with the traditional family-owned viticulture of the Saint-Émilion appellation. Its wines are shaped by the Right Bank’s longstanding reliance on Merlot, supported by Cabernet varieties, with an emphasis on producing approachable Saint-Émilion that retains the region’s characteristic balance of ripe fruit, structure, and earthy complexity.
The château represents the less ostentatious side of Saint-Émilion: wines grounded in regional tradition rather than elaborate cellar technique or luxury positioning. The focus remains on the vineyard, the character of each vintage, and the familiar combination of Merlot’s generosity with Bordeaux’s underlying freshness and tannic structure. The 2022 Rocher-Calon captures that identity particularly well, offering the richness of an exceptional warm year in a classic, food-friendly Saint-Émilion style.
