2023 Domaine Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin "Vieilles Vignes", Burgundy, France

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes from Domaine Faiveley is a beautifully composed Pinot Noir that channels both depth and finesse. Dark cherry, black raspberry, and subtle violet aromas mingle with earthy undertones and a touch of spice. The palate is richly textured yet finely balanced, with ripe tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-tinged finish that reflects the pedigree of old vines and the cooler vintage.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Crafted from old Pinot Noir vines averaging over 50 years in age, Faiveley’s 2023 Vieilles Vignes bottling draws from several well-placed parcels across the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, planted on classic limestone-clay soils. The 2023 vintage was cooler and more moderate than recent years, allowing for longer hang time and excellent aromatic precision. The fruit is hand-harvested, carefully sorted, and vinified using a combination of traditional and modern methods—partial whole-cluster fermentation, native yeasts, and gentle extraction. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels (approximately 30% new) for 14–16 months, adding depth without overwhelming the fruit. Notes of red and black berries, forest floor, and savory spice unfold in a wine that is structured yet refined, with excellent aging potential. Pair with duck breast, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is one of Burgundy’s most historic and respected estates, now in the hands of Erwan Faiveley, the seventh generation of the family. With vineyards spanning from Côte de Nuits to Côte Chalonnaise, Faiveley emphasizes precision, site expression, and sustainable viticulture across its holdings. The estate has undergone a quiet revolution in recent years, refining its winemaking approach to emphasize finesse over power while remaining true to each terroir’s character. In Gevrey-Chambertin, Faiveley holds old-vine plots that deliver structure and depth, resulting in wines that are both expressive in youth and built to evolve gracefully over decades.
