2022 Pagus de LaGrange, Bordeaux, France

A polished, Cabernet-driven Haut-Médoc from the team behind Château Lagrange, offering classic Left Bank character in an approachable, fruit-forward style. Blackcurrant, ripe cherry, dark plum, and violet mingle with cedar, licorice, and subtle baking spice. Medium-bodied and vibrant, the palate combines juicy dark fruit with fresh acidity and refined tannins, while 12 months in barrel lends polish and gentle spice. The finish is fresh, savory, and persistent, making this an accessible introduction to the pedigree of Lagrange.

ABOUT THE WINE

Pagus de Lagrange is the Haut-Médoc bottling of the historic Château Lagrange estate. Although Château Lagrange itself lies in Saint-Julien, the fruit for Pagus comes from vineyards neighboring the Saint-Julien appellation but classified as Haut-Médoc. The estate describes the wine as predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot completing the blend.

These vineyards benefit from the gravel-dominated terroir characteristic of this part of the Médoc. Well-draining gravel encourages Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen while contributing the variety's characteristic combination of cassis fruit, aromatic freshness, and firm but fine tannins. Merlot adds flesh and suppleness, giving Pagus a more immediately approachable personality than the estate's grand vin.

The warm, dry 2022 Bordeaux vintage produced particularly concentrated, ripe fruit, and that generosity is apparent here without overwhelming the wine's freshness. The 2022 shows currant, dark cherry, and spiced-plum character, while retaining a lively, crunchy quality through the palate. The wine is matured for 12 months in barrel, softening the tannins and adding subtle oak-derived complexity while preserving its fruit-driven personality.

Already approachable, the 2022 should continue to develop gracefully over the next several years; one published assessment suggests a drinking window of 2025–2033. Serve around 60–64°F (16–18°C), ideally with a little air, alongside grilled steak, roast lamb, duck, beef stew, roast chicken, mushrooms, or firm cheeses.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Château Lagrange is a historic Third Growth (Troisième Grand Cru Classé) of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, located in Saint-Julien. The estate's history stretches back centuries, but a major modern turning point came in 1983, when it was acquired by the Japanese group Suntory. Significant investment followed in both vineyards and cellar, helping restore Lagrange's reputation and establish the precision and consistency associated with the château today.

The estate encompasses approximately 118 hectares of red-wine vineyards, planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot and Petit Verdot. Its vineyards occupy gravelly rises particularly well suited to Cabernet, and the château has invested heavily in detailed parcel-by-parcel vineyard management and vinification.

Pagus de Lagrange occupies a distinctive place within this hierarchy. It is effectively the estate's third red wine, following Château Lagrange and Les Fiefs de Lagrange, but comes from Haut-Médoc vineyards neighboring Saint-Julien rather than simply functioning as a lesser selection of the grand vin. The same technical expertise and broader philosophy of Château Lagrange are applied to its production, with an emphasis on freshness, finesse, polished tannins, and clear Médoc character.
