2022 Railsback Frères Clairette Blanche, Santa Ynez Valley, California, USA

Delicate yet full of character, the 2022 Clairette Blanche from Railsback Frères offers a rare and beautifully restrained expression of this southern French variety. Aromas of white peach, chamomile, and citrus blossom give way to a dry, textured palate layered with pear skin, almond, and crushed stone. Lifted acidity and a fine phenolic grip lend quiet energy to the elegant, mineral-driven finish.

ABOUT THIS WINE

Railsback Frères’ 2022 Clairette Blanche hails from organically farmed vines in the Santa Ynez Valley—one of the few California sites cultivating this Rhône variety. Grown in a mix of sandy loam and limestone-rich soils, the grapes were hand-harvested early to preserve acidity and freshness. Native yeast fermentation took place in neutral barrels, followed by aging on fine lees for added texture and complexity.
Unfiltered and unfined, the wine captures Clairette’s subtle aromatics and naturally low alcohol while embracing a savory, textural profile. Expect restrained citrus, stone fruit, hints of fennel, and a saline thread that carries through to a long, chalky finish. A rare find in California, this wine is a perfect match for grilled white fish, Provençal-style vegetables, or aged goat cheese.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Railsback Frères is the collaborative project of brothers Eric and Lyle Railsback, founded with a passion for Old World traditions and a focus on Rhône-inspired wines from California’s Central Coast. Rooted in minimal intervention and site-specific expression, the label draws heavily from the brothers’ time in France—particularly the southern Rhône and Provence.
Farming partners adhere to organic or sustainable methods, and winemaking is low-tech and transparent: native yeasts, neutral vessels, and a hands-off philosophy dominate. While Railsback Frères is best known for its rosé and red Rhône blends, the Clairette Blanche exemplifies their commitment to overlooked varieties and subtle, food-friendly wines that bridge California sunshine with European restraint.
