2022 Stellekaya "Hercules" Sangiovese, Stellenbosch, South Africa
A rare South African expression of Sangiovese, the 2022 “Hercules” offers lifted aromatics and structural finesse with a Mediterranean soul. Bright cherry, dried rose petal, and orange peel open into a palate of sour plum, leather, and earthy spice. Silky yet vibrant, the tannins are fine-grained and persistent, guided by a vivid line of acidity and a savoury, herbal finish reminiscent of dried thyme and sunbaked terracotta.

ABOUT THE WINE
Named after the mythic strength of Hercules, this Sangiovese showcases both the variety’s traditional Tuscan character and its unique expression in Stellenbosch’s granite-rich soils and Mediterranean climate. Hand-picked fruit is sourced from a small parcel where Stellenbosch’s warm days and cool nights preserve acidity while allowing for full phenolic ripeness—essential for Sangiovese’s balance of brightness and grip.
The grapes underwent fermentation in open-top tanks, with gentle punch-downs to preserve aromatics and manage tannin extraction. The wine was then aged in older French oak barrels for 12 months, softening its natural edge while maintaining varietal clarity.
Hercules is a vibrant, food-friendly red that invites pairing with tomato-based dishes, grilled vegetables, porchetta, or wild mushroom risotto. It stands out for its freshness, earthiness, and textural tension, offering a compelling New World take on a classic Old World grape.
