2023 Tosalet "Old Vines", Priorat, Spain

The 2022 Old Vine pours a deep purple‑tinged red, almost impenetrable in color. Aromas lean into black and red berry fruits with an herbal‑minty lift. In the mouth it’s bold but well-integrated: robust fruit weight softened by balanced acidity and smooth tannins. It exudes Priorat’s hallmark slate‑mineral intensity with secondary spice touches from oak and skin extraction, finishing long and savory—a great partner with grilled meats, lamb, roasted vegetables, or aged hard cheeses.

ABOUT THIS WINE

The 2022 Tosalet Priorat Old Vines is a blend typically composed of roughly equal parts Garnacha (Grenache) and Cariñena (Carignan), all sourced from old bush vines perched on licorella (slate and quartzite) soils above 300–600 m elevation. The vines are decades old, low-yielding, and hand‑harvested to maximize concentration. After cold maceration, fermentation occurs in controlled stainless steel tanks, with malolactic conversion before bottling, capturing fruit purity with refined structure.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

The wine is made under the Tosalet label, a priorat-focused project of Hammeken Cellars, led by winemaking director Marcelo Morales. The estate honors Priorat’s heritage, using old vines (some up to 50+ years) across villages like Gratallops, La Vilella Alta, and Torroja del Priorat, all rooted in the region’s slate terroir and historical winemaking tradition dating back to medieval Carthusian monks at Scala Dei.
