2024 Weingut Keller "Oberer Hubacker" Riesling Grosses Gewachs, Rheinhessen, Germany
A complex dry German Riesling known for its minerality, citrus/stone fruit notes such as pineapple, apricot, pomelo, herbal hints (chervil), and saline finish, offering vibrant acidity, concentration, and significant aging potential
ABOUT THIS WINE
This Reisling hails from the Dalsheimer Oberer Hubacker, a top-tier vineyard with limestone/marl soils. The limestone contributes to this wine’s distinctive minerality and wet stone character. Vinification involves minimal intervention, focusing on terroir. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a short skin maceration (up to 24 hrs), before undergoing spontaneous fermentation with ambient yeasts in stainless steel or large oak barrels at low temperatures. There is some aging on lees. This wine emphasizes purity, salinity, and deep fruit expression typical of this top Rheinhessen vineyard. On the palate there are notes of fresh pineapple, delicate citrus, herbal notes, apricot, pomelo, jasmine, wet stone, salinity. This wine is juicy, intense with a delicate structure and long, energetic finish. Age-worthy.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Founded in 1789, the Keller estate has reached its modern pinnacle under ninth-generation winemaker Klaus Peter Keller and his wife Julia, who took over in 2001 following his studies at Geisenheim and formative experience in Burgundy, including Domaine Armand Rousseau. From their base in Flörsheim-Dalsheim, Keller farms 18 hectares (including 15 classified as Grosse Lag), unlocking the historic potential of Rheinhessen’s limestone soils to produce some of Germany’s most profound wines.
Keller’s Grand Cru Rieslings are larger-than-life wines of remarkable density and power, making them true thoroughbreds. However, what sets Keller apart is an unmatched ability to shape this intensity into something elegant, precise, and profoundly beautiful. Each GG is deeply concentrated and lavish with detail, yet it is the clarity, minerality, and impeccable form that make these wines unforgettable.
After igniting a revolution in his home vineyards of the Rheinhessisches Hügelland, Klaus Peter Keller has more recently turned his attention north to the storied Roter Hang, the famed “red slope” overlooking the Rhine. Long celebrated for power but often lacking finesse, legendary sites such as Pettenthal and Hipping are now yielding wines of extraordinary balance and refinement under the Keller hand, in both dry and off-dry styles.
