2023 Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez "Ultreia La Claudina" Godello, Bierzo, Spain

A contemplative and textural white, the 2023 “Ultreia La Claudina” is Godello at its most Burgundian—layered, mineral, and quietly powerful. Aromas of white peach, chamomile, and flint rise from the glass, leading into a palate that is simultaneously creamy and crystalline. Broad on entry, it’s balanced by driving acidity and a salty, citrus-laced finish that echoes with almond skin and dried herbs.

ABOUT THE WINE

“Ultreia La Claudina” is a single-parcel expression of old-vine Godello, grown on clay-limestone soils in the village of Valtuille de Abajo in Bierzo. The 2023 vintage continues Raúl Pérez’s signature approach: fruit is hand-harvested and pressed directly into used 500L French oak barrels, where it undergoes spontaneous fermentation and a full year of aging on the lees—without bâtonnage and without added sulfur during élevage.

The result is a deeply nuanced Godello that bridges Atlantic freshness and textural weight. Notes of lemon curd, wild fennel, crushed rock, and raw almond unfold slowly, with a savory, oxidative lift that recalls fine Jura or white Burgundy. “La Claudina” is a natural companion to dishes like roasted poultry, salt-baked celeriac, or scallops with brown butter.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Raúl Pérez is a visionary force in contemporary Spanish wine, celebrated for his ability to translate site and soul into every bottle. Rooted in Bierzo, he focuses on old vineyards, many of them mixed plantings, and works with minimal intervention, native yeasts, and extended lees aging to craft wines of depth and authenticity. Pérez’s whites, in particular, have redefined what’s possible with Godello—moving beyond simple freshness to explore texture, age-worthiness, and site expression.

“Ultreia La Claudina” exemplifies his commitment to quietly radical winemaking, where patience, tradition, and intuition guide the process. It’s a wine that resists easy classification, offering instead a pure reflection of a single place and a singular philosophy.
