2023 Boroli Langhe Nebbiolo "1661", Piedmont, Italy

ABOUT THIS WINE

The fruit for this wine comes primarily from north-facing Nebbiolo vines, supplemented with grapes from younger vineyard rows. Grapes are harvested by hand and sorted on a selection table. After harvest, the grapes undergo 24–48 hours of cold maceration. Fermentation and maceration then take place in stainless steel, followed by a few months of maturation in oak barrels. Therefore, this wine has much less oak and is less élevage-driven than Boroli's Barolos, keeping the focus on Nebbiolo's fruit and aromatics.

The “1661” name has a historical connection to Boroli’s Brunella property. It refers to a cadastral document dating to 1661 that identifies Brunella as an area suited to growing high-quality wine grapes. Boroli also uses the name as a tribute to the farmers who cultivated vineyards around the winery for centuries.

Boroli is a family-owned winery based in Castiglione Falletto, the heart of Piedmont’s Barolo region. The estate was originally founded in 1997 by Silvano and Elena Boroli. Today, the estate is led by their son Achille Boroli, who has refined the winery’s focus on vineyard expression, careful grape selection, and terroir-driven wines.

The estate is centered around Cascina La Brunella, a historic property in Castiglione Falletto. Boroli works with several important Barolo vineyards, including Brunella, Villero, and Cerequio, each offering a distinctive expression of Nebbiolo. In the cellar, the approach combines traditional Barolo techniques with modern precision, including hand harvesting, parcel-by-parcel vinification, long macerations, and extended aging in wood.

While Barolo is the heart of Boroli, the estate also produces more approachable wines such as the Langhe Nebbiolo “1661” and Langhe Chardonnay “Bel Ami.” Across the range, Boroli aims to highlight the character of its vineyards while balancing structure and elegance, producing wines that offer both a classic expression of the Langhe and a polished, contemporary style.
