2023 Chappellet "Mountain Cuvée", Napa Valley, California, USA
Polished, powerful, and deeply expressive, the 2023 Mountain Cuvée offers a luxurious yet approachable expression of mountain-grown Bordeaux varietals. With bold aromas of dark cherry, cassis, and mocha, the palate is dense and velvety, featuring layers of blackberry compote, baking spice, and graphite. Supple tannins and balanced acidity lead to a long, smooth finish laced with cocoa and cedar.
ABOUT THIS WINE
The Mountain Cuvée is Chappellet’s signature Napa Valley red blend, crafted to deliver immediate appeal with serious structure. The 2023 vintage is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, all sourced from rugged hillside vineyards that benefit from well-drained volcanic soils and elevated exposures. These conditions yield fruit of deep concentration and natural freshness.
Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel to preserve varietal clarity, followed by aging in French oak barrels (with a modest percentage of new oak) to impart finesse and complexity. The result is a wine that deftly marries richness and restraint—concentrated yet agile, structured yet smooth. You’ll find layers of ripe black fruit, plum, espresso, and sweet tobacco, with hints of vanilla and crushed herbs.
This cuvée shines with grilled meats, slow-roasted short ribs, aged cheddar, or mushroom risotto. While crafted for early enjoyment, it also has the integrity to age gracefully over the next 5–7 years.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Chappellet Winery, located on the dramatic slopes of Pritchard Hill in Napa Valley, has been a benchmark for mountain viticulture since its founding in 1967 by Donn and Molly Chappellet. Today, the second generation continues the family's vision, combining tradition with sustainability and innovation.
The Mountain Cuvée exemplifies Chappellet’s dedication to quality and their mastery of hillside farming. All vineyards are sustainably farmed, and many are certified organic. While Chappellet’s estate Cabernet Sauvignons remain iconic, wines like the Mountain Cuvée reflect a broader commitment—to crafting expressive, elegant blends that showcase the potential of mountain-grown fruit in Napa.
