ABOUT THE WINE

The 2023 Gigondas is sourced entirely from estate vineyards surrounding the ancient Saint-Cosme chapel, rooted in limestone marl and Miocene sand—soils that contribute both structure and finesse. Made predominantly from old-vine Grenache, with Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault in supporting roles, the wine is vinified with whole clusters and native yeasts, then aged in a mix of neutral oak barrels and large casks. The vintage offered moderate warmth and cool nights, resulting in balanced ripeness, firm acidity, and deep phenolic development. Aromatically complex with notes of dried herbs, crushed blackberries, and tapenade, the wine shows a commanding yet polished structure. It pairs effortlessly with dishes like roasted duck, Provençal beef stew, or rosemary-infused lamb.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Château de Saint-Cosme is a historic, family-run domaine located in the heart of Gigondas, continuously farmed by the Barruol family since 1490. Today, Louis Barruol leads the estate with a philosophy rooted in tradition, terroir, and minimal intervention. The estate is organically farmed, and each of its vineyard parcels is vinified separately to highlight the distinct character of its varied soils and exposures. Known for championing whole-cluster fermentation and natural yeasts, Barruol crafts wines that are dense, age-worthy, and profoundly expressive of place. Saint-Cosme’s Gigondas is considered a benchmark for the appellation, blending the power of the southern Rhône with the elegance of the northern.
