ABOUT THE WINE
Named after a stream that runs through the ColleMassari estate, “Rigoleto” is an approachable yet characterful expression of Montecucco, an emerging Tuscan wine region situated between Montalcino and Scansano. The 2023 vintage blends 70% Sangiovese, 15% Ciliegiolo, and 15% Montepulciano, combining Sangiovese’s bright acidity and cherry-driven character with the floral charm of Ciliegiolo and the richness of Montepulciano.
The grapes come from organically cultivated vineyards planted between 1999 and 2005 on the slopes of Monte Amiata, approximately 320 meters above sea level. Fractured sandstone, calcareous marl, and clay-rich soils contribute to the wine’s distinctive mineral character, while the estate’s cooler hillside conditions help preserve aromatic freshness. Harvested relatively early to emphasize vibrancy, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, followed by approximately 15 days of maceration. The wine matures for 15 months, primarily in stainless steel with a small portion aged in large French oak casks, preserving its lively fruit expression while adding subtle complexity.
The result is a beautifully balanced red with notes of crushed cherries, blackberries, rose petals, cinnamon, and balsamic herbs. Its refreshing acidity and polished tannins make it exceptionally versatile at the table, pairing naturally with pappardelle al ragù, wood-fired pizza, grilled sausages, roasted pork, and aged Pecorino Toscano.
ABOUT THE PRODUCER
Founded in 1998 by siblings Claudio Tipa and Maria Iris Bertarelli, Castello ColleMassari has played a pioneering role in establishing Montecucco as one of Tuscany’s most compelling wine regions. Located near Cinigiano in the heart of the Maremma, the estate encompasses more than 1,200 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, and protected woodland. Its commitment to environmental stewardship is central to its identity, with certified organic farming practiced since 2003 and a strong emphasis on biodiversity, soil health, and preserving the region’s historic Sangiovese heritage.
ColleMassari combines traditional Tuscan viticulture with innovative, low-intervention winemaking. Its architecturally distinctive, gravity-fed winery, designed by Edoardo Milesi, minimizes mechanical handling of grapes while allowing precise control throughout production. Rather than pursuing excessive extraction or oak influence, the estate emphasizes purity of fruit, balance, and authentic expressions of its diverse terroirs. Recognized as Winery of the Year by Gambero Rosso in 2014, ColleMassari remains a benchmark for sustainable Tuscan winemaking, producing wines that celebrate the region’s agricultural traditions while embracing a modern vision of quality and sustainability.
